The moment his final exam ended, he didn't even bother going back to the dorms. He sprinted straight for The Observatory.
When he walked in, the apartment was eerily quiet, as if completely empty. But her sneakers were sitting neatly in the entryway, lined up perfectly next to his much larger ones.
Her purse and coat were hanging in the closet.
A sudden wave of nerves hit him. "Candie, I'm home!" he called out.
Total silence.
He cleared his throat, swapped his shoes, and headed straight for the master bedroom. There was a tiny lump under the duvet. She had pulled the covers entirely over her head, curled up like a hiding snail.
A fond smile broke across his face. He walked over quietly and wrapped his arms around the lump over the blankets. He could see her ears burning red; she refused to look at him.
He reached under the edge of the blanket to tuck a stray lock of hair behind her ear, leaning down to press a heavy kiss to her cheek. "Did you miss me?"
He had just come in from the winter chill, his lips cool against her skin, while she was radiating absolute warmth.
She shook her head vigorously. "No. I see you every day. Why would I miss you?"
"But I missed you." He missed her every single second.
Whether she was right in front of him or miles away, she was always on his mind.
He nuzzled against her ear, his deep voice dropping to a gravelly murmur. A shiver tore down her spine. Her heart, already racing from the moment he walked in, now hammered wildly in her chest.
Anticipating what was about to happen, she was completely terrified.
She instantly regretted talking such a big game earlier about wanting to go all the way.
