Bonnie knew deep down that Lawrence harbored no inappropriate feelings. But Hannah was a ticking time bomb. The woman constantly dropped manipulative hints and pulled petty stunts just to make her uncomfortable. And since Hannah was the foster daughter of the Lane family, she was backed by over a decade of familial loyalty. It wasn't something easily erased.
Even if she married Lawrence down the line, dealing with a sister-in-law who harbored ulterior motives meant a lifetime of swallowing unfair grievances.
The more Bonnie thought about it, the more furious she became. She thrashed against him, trying to break free. Lawrence simply spun her around, pulling her back into his embrace, and pressed a kiss against her freezing hair.
The howling wind carried sharp snowflakes, biting at Lawrence's exposed skin.
He shielded Bonnie entirely with his own body.
"Candie, it's my fault. I didn't handle Hannah's situation well. I let you suffer, and I picked a fight with you over nothing. I was wrong. I was so damn wrong."
Her mind a chaotic mess, Bonnie completely missed the fact that he had referred to his foster sister by her first name. Enveloped in the deeply familiar, intoxicating warmth of his chest, she only wanted to cry. She wanted Lawrence to pamper and soothe her just like he used to, and for him to cut ties with that toxic foster sister forever.
But she knew that was a pipe dream. That was his sister.
Bonnie broke into loud, uninhibited sobs, trembling violently against his chest. Her muffled cries sounded so pitiful and deeply wronged.
Hooking an arm under her legs, Lawrence effortlessly scooped her up and carried her to the car, pulling open the back door and climbing in with her.
The interior was as warm as spring.
Finally snapping back to reality, Bonnie angrily slammed her fists against him. "Lawrence, stop playing games! I want to go home!"
