Someone tried to comfort Jasper, but instead he just burst out crying.
At that moment, Lawrence and Odette arrived. They had come out of the doctor’s office looking for Jasper, only to find he had disappeared. Just as anxiety started to take over, they spotted a crowd gathering nearby.
Jasper’s cries echoed through the hallway.
Moving in closer, Lawrence caught sight of Bonnie sitting on the floor. Her face was ghostly pale. She held her arm tight against her body, obviously trying to tough out the pain. The sight of her like that made Lawrence’s chest tighten with worry.
He hurried over, dropping to his knees right in front of her. Reaching out, he tried to hold her face gently. “What happened? Did you fall? Are you hurt?”
Bonnie’s arm felt numb and heavy, and there was a dull ache in her chest that she tried hard to ignore. She swallowed back her tears and pushed him away, her voice flat and cold. “Leave me alone.”
A nurse who’d been standing by piped up. “Your girlfriend was pushed by that lady over there. Took a bad fall. I don’t want to lecture you, but didn’t she just have a stomach scope? Those drugs must still be in her system. Where were you?”
Bonnie shut her eyes, feeling the whole thing becoming more and more ridiculous. She tried to push Lawrence off again, but instead he scooped her up into his arms.
He looked around for somewhere to set her down, but then he noticed Hannah watching him, her eyes watery and red. Next to her, Odette shook her head, her expression like stone.
Lawrence froze, completely stuck.
Bonnie had had enough. As the pain started to fade, she clenched her jaw. “Lawrence, are you out of your mind? Put me down.”
Seeing her struggle, Lawrence finally set her on her feet. Once she found her balance, Bonnie walked right up to Hannah. She didn’t say a word—she just reached out and gave Hannah a shove.
She hadn’t even used much force, but Hannah stumbled back a little, caught just in time by Jackson’s arm.
Bonnie spoke calmly. “Keep your husband and your son under control.”
Hannah’s face flushed red. She forced herself to stay calm even as Jasper was still crying and gagging. Slowly, she managed to regain her poise.
