Three Years Later, He Came Back Begging novel Chapter 84

Lawrence jerked his head up, his eyes rimmed red. “What about her ear?”

What could have happened to Bonnie’s ear?

Shirley paused, looking at him with an expression that was hard to read. It took her a moment to speak. “Candie’s got trouble hearing from her left ear. You really didn’t know?”

The memory hit Lawrence all at once. He’d noticed it so many times—Bonnie lifting her hand to her left ear, her face pinched with discomfort. It had never crossed his mind that she might actually be losing her hearing.

Back when they were together, Bonnie always seemed so healthy, almost perfect. Her hearing was so sharp. Every time he called home, she’d perk up, eavesdropping even from across the room.

Especially if he was talking to Hannah.

Somehow, even if they kept their distance, Bonnie always caught bits and pieces. He used to tease her about having rabbit ears, asking how they could possibly be so good.

That joke always set her off. She’d accuse him of crossing the line, whispering with Hannah like they had some secret world without her.

Bonnie would say she was upset. Bit by bit, her annoyance would turn into real hurt, and before he knew it, he’d spend the whole night trying to make it up to her, until she finally forgave him.

Trying to steady himself, Lawrence forced out the words. “How did she lose her hearing? And…?”

And what else did Shirley mean, saying he’d ruined Bonnie’s life?

A simple breakup, even the pain of heartbreak, could that really make a mother despise him so much, see him as the villain?

There had to be something else he was missing.

Shirley kept her tone calm. “If you don’t know, let’s leave it there. I’m not telling you this because I want an apology, or anything from you. I just hope all of you can move on. Lawrence, you should go home.”

She walked away, heading down the stairs without another word.

Lawrence thought about following her, to ask more, but stopped himself. Instead, he turned around and walked back toward the waiting area.

Jackson saw the movement and stood up quietly to leave. Before he went, he reached out and gave Jasper’s head a gentle pat.

Jasper had finally stopped crying, and he gave Jackson a sweet, wobbly smile.

Jackson smiled back. As he passed Lawrence, Lawrence’s eyes locked on the cut at the corner of Jackson’s mouth.

Jackson seemed oblivious. He just patted Lawrence’s shoulder. “Don’t hurt her again.”

Lawrence didn’t answer. He walked right past him, heading for his mom and Hannah.

Hannah felt her nerves starting to fray, but she did her best to look steady and meet his gaze. Lawrence ignored her, his eyes fixed on his mother. “Mom, what happened to Bonnie?”

Both Odette and Hannah looked stunned. Hannah’s hands started to shake as fear and confusion rushed in, but Odette reached out under the table, gently squeezing her daughter’s hand, trying to ground her.

Odette kept her voice even and smooth. “I haven’t seen Bonnie in a long time. How would I know if something happened to her?”
