Bonnie’s eyes still had that soft, misty beauty, but there wasn’t a flicker left in them for him. She lifted her hand and pushed his arm off her shoulder, not hesitating for a second. Then, finally, she spoke for the first time that day.
“Sorry, I’m hard of hearing. I can’t hear what you’re saying.”
If Lawrence was asking, he must have found something out at the hospital. How much did he know? Bonnie honestly didn’t care anymore.
Her words hit Lawrence right in the chest. His eyes turned red on the spot, shimmering with tears. He was just seconds away from breaking down right in front of her.
Bonnie ducked her head, ready to leave, but Lawrence caught her arm and stopped her. He looked totally wrecked, his throat tight, like everything hurt all at once. Just a single sentence from her made him wish he could die to make things right. He had to bite back the bitterness and the urge to pull her into a hug.
“Candie, I’m sorry,” Lawrence said quietly, his voice steady but strained. “I never meant for the breakup to hurt you like this. My mom can be harsh, but she didn’t do it on purpose. Don’t let this mess ruin things with your mom, okay? Please don’t be angry at her. Can we go back to the hospital and see about your hearing?”
It took Bonnie a moment to realize he still had no idea what really happened. He thought her hearing problems were because his mom slapped her.
Bonnie’s thoughts drifted for a moment, remembering coming back from the States—and that slap from her mom.
Did it hurt? Sure. But it wasn’t that bad. The real pain was losing Lawrence, not knowing why it happened, or what on earth to do next. How to look herself in the eye, how to face her parents.
But nothing compared to what happened at the airport… Hannah’s fans holding her down by a sink, hitting her again and again. They spit ugly words, accused her of being nothing but the other woman, asked if she had any shame. It still made her feel prickly all over, like she couldn’t sit or stand or even lie down without jolting. Sometimes she worried that just hearing those words over and over would make them real, would turn her into exactly what they said she was—Lawrence and Hannah’s third wheel.
But she knew, deep down, she wasn’t. No matter what anyone said.
