His eyes changed.
The brown bled away completely and left nothing but molten gold. Animal intelligence stared back at me through Cianโs face. The wolf had won.
He charged.
The distance between us disappeared in a heartbeat. I felt the gift rise inside me without thought, without hesitation. The small miracles that lived in my blood surged forward and met him halfway.
My hand shot out and the psychic force slammed into his chest. He stopped mid-stride like heโd hit a wall. His body went rigid, held suspended by invisible shields only I could feel and manipulate.
I pushed.
He flew backward and crashed onto the bed. The frame groaned under the impact but held. I kept the pressure steady, pinning him there while my free hand reached for the restraints already attached to the headboard.
His eyes blazed with fury and confusion. He struggled against the force holding him down but it was useless.
I grabbed the first restraint and snapped it around his wrist. The platinum chain gleamed in the low light. I moved to the other side and secured his second wrist just as quickly.
Only then did I release the psychic hold.
He exploded into motion immediately. I watched as he yanked against the chains with everything he had.
The bed rattled violently.
The headboard slammed against the wall with enough force to crack plaster. I realized then that the bed frame was bolted to the floor, embedded deep in the buildingโs foundation.
Moonhaven really had thought of everything.
Cian fought the restraints for several long moments. He pulled, twisted, and tried to break free with pure brute strength. However, the chains held. They were designed for exactly this, forged specifically to contain an Alpha in the throes of heat-induced frenzy.
Finally, he stopped. His chest heaved with exertion. Sweat dampened his hairline. He let his head fall back against the pillows and stared at the ceiling.
When he spoke, his voice came out thick and rough. Almost unrecognizable.
"Do you not want me?"
The question hit me harder than any physical blow could have.
I climbed onto the bed and positioned myself over him, straddling his hips with my thighs on either side. The heat radiating from his body seeped through the thin fabric of my dress.
"Of course I do." I looked down at him and let him see the truth written across my face. "I will always want you."
His eyes searched mine. His beast seemed to be looking for deception or hesitation or doubt. He would find none.
He lifted his head and pressed his mouth to my neck. Not biting. He just stayed there for a minute before his tongue started to work and he traced a line up to my ear and I shivered.
"We donโt need the restraints," he whispered.
The words ghosted across my skin and made heat pool low in my belly.
"A part of me wants that too." I cupped his face between my hands and forced him to look at me. "But we need to be safe. For the baby."
Something flickered behind his eyes. A moment of clarity breaking through the gold.
"Youโre still in there," I said. "You must be. His primal state wouldnโt bother trying to convince me. It is clear to me that it is quite bad at pretending."
