too late for a second chance novel (Lila and Dorian) novel Chapter 397

"Give me a minute. I need to double-check." The front desk staff sounded unsure.

Lila nodded politely. "Sorry for the trouble."

The company leadership was mostly busy during Christma. Sometimes, they might not be in the office.

Soon, the staff member came back with a reply. "Mr. Klime is still in the office, but you need to hurry up if you want to meet him. He'll leave in half an hour because he has an event to attend in the afternoon."

Lila nodded again with gratitude as she tightened her grip on the vacuum flask. After her parents' death, she had met with Gordon a few times. She first met him at the funeral. The second time, she met him at the Morgan residence. But these had happened many years ago.

In the few times they met, they rarely spoke to each other.

Lila inhaled deeply before knocking on his office door.

Gordon's assistant answered the door, but the assistant did not know her. Still, he didn't say much since Lila must be an important person, judging from her outfit and the fact she was allowed into Wilmer Tower.

He frowned a little at the vacuum flask in her hand.

"Are you looking for Mr. Klime?"

She nodded. Despite sensing his displeasure, she calmly explained, "I'm—"

"You shouldn't step foot in the office. Please contact Mr. Klime privately if you need to. Get out now!"

It took Lila a while to grasp the subtext. Did the assistant mistake her as Gordon's kept woman?

She furrowed her brows and raised her voice. "Mr. Klime, I am Lila—"

The assistant rudely shoved her out and cut her off. "Are you done yet? You will get nothing out of making a scene."

She stumbled a little.

Wearing a faint smile, she questioned him, "Who do you think I am? Mr. Klime's mistress who harasses him at his office so he'd marry me?"

She did not speak that loudly, but Gordon overheard her. His face darkened. He slapped his assistant on the face and yelled, "You clueless jerk! Get out now!"

Flustered, the assistant scurried away with his head hung low.

Lila turned around and glanced at him before turning to Gordon. However, she no longer held him in high regard as she did when she first arrived at the office.

Gordon's assistant must have suspected her—without even asking—for a good reason. She bet the assistant had handled too many similar cases before.

Gordon was no longer the gentleman she remembered him as.

Sensing Lila's displeasure, Alfredo gently patted her back with a smile. "Looks like our girl is getting used to expressing her anger. This is good. At least you know we have your back."

His words stunned her for a moment. Then, she realized that the first thing she did upon seeing Alfredo was, indeed, to ask for his help.
