VIVIAN returned home two days after she had left.
The small gate clicked shut behind her as she dragged her pink coloured small suitcase through the veranda. The afternoon sun was still hanging lazily in the sky, casting long shadows across the tiled floor of the veranda. From the sitting room window, Fiona had already spotted her.
The moment the door opened, Fiona sprang up from the couch, excitement lighting up her face.
“Finally!” she exclaimed, hurrying toward the door. “Madam Vale has returned from her romantic getaway.”
Vivian forced a small smile as she stepped inside, placing her bag beside the wall. Her movements were slow, almost mechanical.
Fiona paused. Something was off.
She had expected Vivian to walk in glowing with happiness— the kind of happiness that usually followed spending two whole days with a rich, attentive boyfriend. Vivian normally would have been talking nonstop already, laughing, showing pictures, flaunting gifts.
But instead, she looked… drained.
Her shoulders were slumped. Her eyes carried a distant look.
Fiona frowned.
“What is with that face?” she asked, crossing her arms. “Don’t tell me you guys fought.”
Vivian kicked off her shoes quietly and sank into the nearest chair without replying.
Fiona’s eyes widened.
“Wait… don’t tell me Vale didn’t get you anything.”
Still silence.
“Oh wow.” Fiona threw her hands in the air. “So the great Mr. Romantic suddenly forgot his manners?”
Vivian finally lifted her head.
“That’s not it.”
Fiona blinked.
“Then what is it?”
Vivian sighed and leaned back in the chair.
“Vale gave me gifts.”
Fiona raised a brow.
“Oh?”
“And he even sent things for you too.”
Now Fiona’s eyes sparkled.
“For me?”
Vivian nodded toward the suitcase.
“There is a bag inside. Perfume and a purse.”
Fiona rushed to the suitcase like a child on Christmas morning, unzipping it with enthusiasm. She rummaged through until she found a small gift bag.
The moment she pulled out the perfume bottle, her mouth dropped open.
“This is expensive!”
She turned the bottle over like it was made of gold.
“And this purse!” she gasped. “Vivian!”
But the excitement slowly faded when she glanced back at her friend. Vivian still looked miserable, and Fiona’s brows pulled together again.
She closed the suitcase and walked back slowly.
“Okay,” she said, dropping into the seat opposite Vivian. “So Vale gave you gifts.”
Vivian nodded.
“You two didn’t fight?”
“No.”
“You didn’t argue?”
“No.”
“You a.re not angry at him?”
“No.”
Fiona stared harder now.
“You even saw him off at the airport, right?”
Vivian nodded again.
“Yes.”
Fiona leaned back, confused.
“Alright then.”
She gestured dramatically.
“So what exactly is the problem here?”
Vivian’s fingers tightened together in her lap. Her gaze drifted to the floor.
Fiona watched her carefully.
“Why that long face?” she asked again, this time more gently.
For a moment Vivian didn’t respond. Then she exhaled slowly.
“It happened yesterday.”
