VIVIAN had been on the floor for a long time before she finally moved. She didn't know exactly how long, but it was enough for her knees to ache, enough for the tears to dry from her face, leaving a hollow feeling in her heart. She pulled herself up slowly, sat on the edge of the couch, and stared at the wall with the blank, wrung-out expression of someone who had nothing left to live for.
Fiona found her like that when she came back from her evening run. She stopped in the doorway, taking in the swollen eyes, the tear-streaked face, the rumpled clothing, everything that said that Vivian wasn't okay. Something had happened on her trip, and whatever it was that left her broken...
"Oh my! Viv! What you doing here? When did you return?" She crossed the room immediately, dropping her keys on the table. "What happened? What is wrong? You are back quite early. You were supposed to meet Valentine's family, right? Did something happen?"
Vivian lifted up her brows to look at her, she struggled the heaviness of her eyelids that just wanted her to close her eyes.
"Close the door," she said quietly, still trying to keep her eyes on Fiona, but failing woefully as another tear streamed down her cheeks.
Fiona closed it immediately and rushed to sit beside her.
"Talk to me, Viv. What happened?"
Vivian opened her mouth, closed it, and then tried to speak again.
"You remember what I told you," she began, her voice hoarse, "about that part of my life I regret so much and never ever want to talk about? The thing I did years ago that I said I would carry to my grave? I didn't even plan on telling Vale... I knew I would eventually, but... That's like a stain in my life, and maybe I should have told him ever since we bumped into Adrian... I should have suspected at least."
Fiona's expression shifted, she could feel her heart racing because she already knew where the conversation was headed, but she didn't want to conclude just yet.
"Continue, Viv. What actually happened?"
"I walked straight into it today." Vivian laughed, and it came out broken. "I walked into it on Valentine's arm, in my best dress, thinking I was going to meet his family." She pressed her hands flat against her thighs. "His sister, Fi. The woman he calls his big sister. The one he talks about like she hung the moon for him... It's her..." She choked.
Fiona stared at her. "No."
"Yes." Vivian nodded bitterly.
"Vivian—"
"It was her." Her voice cracked on the last word. "It was Amelia. She was standing right there at the door smiling at us, and then she saw my face and I saw hers and—" She stopped. "I ran. I literally ran, Fiona. I took the keys from Valentine's hand and I drove away like a coward because I couldn't stand there for one more second."
Fiona sat back slowly. "Oh God!” She cupped her mouth.
"I told you," Vivian said, her eyes filling again even though she thought she had no tears left. "I told you karma wasn't finished with me. I said it. You told me I was being dramatic. You told me to stop living in the past." She shook her head. "But I knew. I always knew it was going to catch up to me somehow. I just never imagined it would come for me like this. Through the one person in my life who actually felt real. I have tried so hard to right my wrongs, but somehow, I—" she broke down again, this time crying heavily.
"What did Valentine say?" Fiona asked carefully after Vivian's sobs had subsided.
"Nothing at first. He chased after me, but I was already in the car." Vivian wiped her face with the back of her hand. "I drove around for almost an hour before I went back to his house. I don't even remember half of it." She exhaled shakily. "Fear and panic surged through me. I sat down for hours figuring what to say to him when he returned, and when he did, he asked for space, he didn't even cared to listen to what I had to say."
