ADRIAN had been in the office for forty minutes before Peter arrived, which was unusual enough that Peter stopped in the doorway and looked at him with open suspicion.
"You are here early," Peter began in his special way of starting conversations.
"I'm always here early," Adrian replied without looking up from his desk, you are the one who is always late.
"Not this early… sir," Peter set his files down and studied his boss. Adrian was staring at a document he clearly wasn't reading. His coffee was untouched. His tie was slightly off-center, which for Adrian Cole was practically a distress signal. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing is wrong."
"Sir..." He said slowly and stood across from him. "I know that looks on your face. I have been seeing different looks to know what it means, it's just that sometimes I don't know the reason behind it. That's why I'm asking."
Adrian finally looked up, letting out a huff and rolling his eyes at Peter's remark. That was true, but it didn't stop what was bothering him. He thought about telling Peter, but since he already knew most of his life, he decided to confide in him
"Amelia isn't picking up my calls."
Peter pulled out the chair across from the desk and sat down with the ease of a man who had been doing this long enough to know when standing on ceremony was a waste of time.
"Since when?"
"Since Sunday evening. I called twice yesterday and twice this morning." He leaned back in his chair. "She always picks up. Even when she doesn't want to talk, she picks up and tells me she doesn't want to talk. That is how I know something is different."
"Could she just be busy?"
"I know the difference between busy and unavailable, Peter."
"Could something have happened with the children?"
"The kids are fine. They were the actual ugh reason I have been calling, but Hazel sent me a voice note this morning to tell me about Gabriel's project." He tapped his finger once on the desk. "It's Amelia, and I know that something happened. And Hazel will likely know nothing about it because Amelia is really good with keeping things to herself."
Peter was quiet for a moment.
"Do you know what?"
"No." Adrian's jaw tightened slightly. "And that's what's bothering me. I can't fix something I don't know about."
