Liliana was speechless.
A corner of her mouth twitched. She was at a complete loss for words.
What a mess.
Her tone was flat. "Doctor, you've misunderstood. He's delusional. I'm not his wife, and I have absolutely no connection to him."
"If you need someone to pick him up, you should contact his assistant."
Not wanting to make things difficult for the staff, Liliana gave them Lucas's phone number.
Lucas, however, was already out of the country, vacationing with his wife and kids by the Aegean Sea.
When he received the call from the doctor, he was equally exasperated. "Ah, this… this…"
"I'm abroad right now, not in the country."
The doctor sounded troubled, letting out a heavy sigh. "Sir, we can't get in touch with anyone else."
"The patient is unconscious. We can't just leave him here unclaimed, and then there's the matter of the medical bills…"
Lucas quickly interjected, "Doctor, whatever the medical bills are, I'll pay for them."
"Look… if there's really no one else, I'll make some calls. I'll see if I can find someone who's free to pick him up and take him home."
After hanging up, Lucas rubbed the bridge of his nose, his face a mask of misery.
It had only just dawned on him.
Somehow, Mr. Cooper had become a man utterly alone in the world.
But thinking about it, it made sense.
A grandfather who played favorites, a mother who didn't love him, a father who was constantly trying to kill him, and the broken man he had become…
Wow.
When he tallied it all up, Linton truly was all by himself.
He didn't really have any friends, either.
There were plenty of sycophants and opportunists fawning over him, most of them with ulterior motives. The only person he could speak to honestly, Matthew, was…
The more Lucas thought about it, the more his heart ached for him. He couldn't help but sigh heavily again, phone in hand, muttering to himself.
"Mr. Cooper, I've only just realized…"
The company was closed for the holidays, and everyone had gone home to celebrate. He couldn't just summon someone back on short notice.
And he wouldn't dare call Liliana, not even if he had the courage of a lion.
When Gabriel Hart agreed, Lucas was stunned. He hadn't held out much hope. He quickly thanked him.
"Mr. Hart, thank you. I really can't thank you enough!"
"What a mess this is, troubling you like this during the holidays."
"Mr. Hart, if you could just get Mr. Cooper back to his own house, that would be enough. You know the address…"
Gabriel, phone in hand, instinctively glanced over at Liliana, who was sitting in the living room, quietly watching an educational show for toddlers. His eyes darkened. With one hand in his pocket, he replied coolly.
"It's no trouble. I happen to have some questions for him myself."
Lucas's heart skipped a beat, and a chill ran down his spine from the coldness in Gabriel's voice.
He had a bad feeling about this.
But at this point, he was just grateful someone was willing to help during the holidays. He was in no position to be picky.
