Untying her apron, she called out with a cheerful smile, "Liliana, Gabriel, come on! Dinner's ready!"
Gabriel, who had been sitting quietly on the sofa, slowly looked up. He glanced thoughtfully toward the entryway, pursed his lips, and said nothing as he rose and walked to the dining table.
Liliana sat next to Mrs. Hart, helping her pour wine and juice. For the first time in a while, the festive atmosphere had brought a touch of joy to the young woman's delicate, melancholic face, and she seemed a bit happier.
Everyone tacitly understood that they hadn't truly moved on from Matthew's death.
Especially Liliana.
But they all maintained a silent agreement not to speak of it, as if letting time slowly bury the sorrow deep within their hearts was the only way forward.
Liliana carefully eased herself into her chair, supporting her belly, and was just about to pick up her utensils.
Suddenly.
*Ding-dong.*
The doorbell at the entrance rang.
Liliana froze for a second, her eyes widening in surprise. "It's Christmas's Eve. Who would be visiting at this hour?"
Gabriel stood up, his expression calm. "I'll get it."
Liliana looked at him, her brow furrowing in suspicion. A flicker of doubt crossed her eyes.
"Gabriel, did you invite someone? Do you know who it is?" she asked instinctively.
Gabriel's tone was unsurprised, as if he had been expecting the visitor all along.
Liliana and Mrs. Hart exchanged a puzzled glance.
Who could it be, acting so mysteriously?
"Liliana…"
Suddenly.
She tried to hold it in, but she couldn't help but roll her eyes.
Did he really think that was a believable excuse?
She wasn't furious, though. Her heart was calm. More than anger, she felt a sense of curiosity.
She couldn't help but stare at Gabriel, who was now sitting across from her. She didn't even bother to look at the anxious Linton standing at the door. "Gabriel," she asked softly, "didn't you used to hate him? What's with the change of heart?"
Gabriel lowered his gaze and picked up his utensils. "Liliana, don't read too much into it. Don't get the wrong idea," he said calmly.
"The only reason I invited him here tonight is because we needed someone to eat the leftovers."
Liliana didn't know how to respond.
She was at a loss for words and suddenly had no desire to talk to him anymore.
She looked up at Linton coldly, a smirk on her lips, and said expressionlessly…
