Too Late, Mr. Cooper: Your Bride Ran with Your Baby novel Chapter 445

Gabriel was at a loss. He couldn't bear to tell Liliana the truth.

But his mother was right. Could they really keep Liliana and Amelia away from Linton's funeral? He was the baby's father, and... he was Liliana's childhood friend.

Gabriel thought for a moment. "Old Mr. Cooper is flying in tonight for the funeral. We can ask him what he thinks we should do."

Mrs. Hart nodded, sighing helplessly. "I suppose that's all we can do."

Upstairs, Liliana had finally managed to get Amelia to sleep.

She held the baby in her arms, curled up on the cushioned window seat, clutching her phone.

The screen was open to her chat with Linton. He had sent a flurry of messages, but Liliana's eyes were fixed on the last one, a voice note.

Her gaze was lowered, her delicate face betraying no emotion. Her calmness was so absolute it was unsettling.

After a long silence, she reached out with a slender, pale finger and pressed play.

Linton's familiar, cool voice filled the air, laced with a hoarseness and a complex, indecipherable emotion. It was mixed with the sound of howling wind, making the words slightly unclear.

"Liliana, take care of the baby."

"I love you both..."

Liliana's dark, clear pupils contracted slightly. She lowered her lashes, pressed her lips together, and said nothing.

After another long while, her lashes fluttered. She gently patted Amelia's soft little body and murmured thoughtfully, "Amelia... do you think... Mommy is a jinx?"

After hearing the story, old Mr. Cooper's tears fell. He gripped his cane tightly and sighed with deep regret. "It's my fault. It's all my fault! I shouldn't have been so soft on Damian and just sent him abroad. If I had been tougher, if I had sent him to the police to be reformed, this wouldn't have..."

Mrs. Hart gently patted his back, comforting him through her own sobs. "Don't blame yourself, sir. You'd think a father wouldn't harm his own son. Who could have imagined that Linton's father would be so cruel as to drag his own son down with him at the end?"

But how could old Mr. Cooper not blame himself?

He wiped his tears with the back of his hand and then asked with concern, "What about Liliana? Does she know? How are she and the baby?"

Mrs. Hart shook her head, her expression pained. "Liliana doesn't know yet. We haven't dared to tell her."

"Sir, Linton's funeral is in a few days. We can't delay it any longer. The police haven't found his body; they're still searching. All they found at the scene was the burned-out car. The medical examiner said... there's virtually no chance of survival."
