After breakfast, Sophia and Annabelle loaded all the camping gear they'd prepared the night before into the car.
Just as they were about to head out, Sophia's phone rang.
She glanced at the caller ID-it was Richard. She quickly picked up.
"Mr. Sterling, have you left yet?" Sophia asked.
Richard had barely slept a wink last night. He was exhausted, but his body felt wired with anticipation.
He finally managed to doze off just before dawn, but was wide awake again before seven.
He'd never tossed and turned all night over anyone before.
Hearing Sophia's voice through the phone was like a jolt of caffeine.
He instantly perked up.
"Are you all packed? I'm in the garage. Hop in my car," Richard said.
Sophia quickly pushed open the car door and got out, looking around the corridor for him.
Suddenly, headlights flashed ahead, making Sophia squint as the bright light hit her eyes.
She instinctively raised her hand to shield her face as the car slowly pulled up and stopped right in front of her.
The window rolled down, and there was Richard in the back seat, his eyes unreadable and piercing as they met hers.
"How did you sleep last night?" Richard asked
Sophia smiled and said, "Not bad. What about you? Have you had breakfast yet? Annabelle and I already ate."
Annabelle leaned against the car window, grinning. She said,
"Uncle Richard, you missed out. If you'd come earlier, you could've had one of Sophie's homemade sandwiches."
Richard sighed with genuine disappointment. He said, "Ah, too bad. I really missed out."
Sophia noticed his disappointed look and said warmly, "I brought you some homemade coffee. Take a sip and see what you think."
She walked over to the Land Rover, grabbed the thermos she'd packed just for Richard, and came back to the Rolls-Royce.
Passing the thermos to him, she added with a gentle smile, "Hope you like it."
Richard took the thermos, unscrewed the lid, and was immediately hit with the inviting aroma of fresh coffee.
He took a small sip-the taste was bold and slightly bitter, with a faint touch of coconut milk and a subtle aftertaste of sweetness.
He thought, 'Perfect. Just the way I like it.'
He took another sip, nodded with a grin, and said, "Wow, this is really good. I had no idea you were handy in the kitchen and could make coffee, too!"
Just when Sophie thought Annabelle was only teasing, Richard actually turned to her and asked, "Ms. Evans, would you like to ride with me?"
Sophia just stood there, at a total loss for words.
With the way he looked at her-so earnest, it felt almost like a proposal-Sophie could only feel her cheeks growing even hotter.
"It's getting late. Let's get going," Sophia said quickly, trying to change the subject.
With that, she walked around the front of the car, opened the passenger door of the Rolls-Royce, and hopped in.
Annabelle couldn't help but laugh. She gave Richard a playful fist pump and said, "Uncle Richard, you got this!"
Richard shot her a look, reminded Mark to drive safely, and then got into the car.
Sophia turned her head to look out the window, the tips of her ears turning red
Richard glanced over at her, and when he realized she hadn't fastened her seatbelt, he leaned in without hesitation.
Sophia, startled by the sudden movement behind her, whipped her head around-and nearly collided face-to-face with Richard
Her back pressed into the seat, tense all over, her heart racing.
"Mr. Sterling?" she called out, her voice tinged with nerves.
