They chatted for a few more minutes before hanging up.
Ethan's recent behavior had been excellent, but given the deep scars from her past life, completely embracing him as a brother was impossible.
For now, they could only interact as friends.
The next morning, shortly after breakfast, Mira and Master Ellis were preparing to mix more medication when a group of officers arrived for a registry check.
They held fourteen sketches, meticulously comparing faces. Mira could clearly see Dominic's likeness on one of the pages.
But since arriving in Balkana, Mira's group hadn't interacted with any officials. Their appearances were only known from that brief clash with the border guards.
As a result, the rest of the sketches looked nothing like them.
Out of all the drawings, Dominic's was the only accurate one. There was a blurry sketch that vaguely resembled Jax, mostly because of his distinct braid.
Thankfully, Jax was currently disguised as a Caucasian.
The officers conducted a routine scan of the room, noted the completely different skin tones, and promptly left.
The Ellis family's disguise techniques weren't something ordinary people could see through.
Once they were gone, Jax scoffed, "Man, the local officials must be losing their minds. They never dreamed we'd slip right through their fingers."
"They only have themselves to blame for having ulterior motives."
Brayden Knox added.
"Alright, settle down. Every day we're stuck in Balkana is a day we're in danger. Don't celebrate just yet."
Owen reminded them.
They assumed they were in the clear and the officers wouldn't return. To their surprise, the same squad showed up the very next day.
This time, they brought photographs of the fourteen fugitives, scrutinizing everyone with far more intensity. But despite the close inspection, the group maintained their flawless Western appearances and spoke fluent Javenaire English.
Mira and her team had prosthetic bridges, giving them distinctively sharp Western noses, and their eyebrows were dyed blonde. No one would ever mistake them for Mavarians.
Even so, each person was examined multiple times.
