Too Late to Hold Me Back novel Chapter 1296

What kind of terrible people are they? Mira is only in high school, and they expect her to support a whole extended family? Unbelievable.

Ethan thought.

His little sister had been raised by her adoptive parents, not this greedy old woman. He wasn't about to let her take advantage of Mira.

Ethan assumed his threat would shut the old woman down, but she surprisingly fired back, "If he beats people up, won't the police arrest him?"

"He just beats people; he doesn't kill them. At worst, he leaves them crippled. Even if the police do arrest him, my parents just throw some money around, and he walks right out."

Ethan deliberately exaggerated the situation, knowing the old woman was completely ignorant of how the real world worked.

That finally got Grandma Finn to lower her head in defeat.

Meanwhile, Aunt Brenda focused entirely on shoving corn into her bags, barely speaking a word the entire time.

She knew full well that since Minnie wasn't her own child, there was no way she was getting a free ticket to the city. As long as Mira took her son, Ryan, she was satisfied.

Before long, Ryan arrived with his luggage. Mira had called him ahead of time, and he had already sorted out his school transfer paperwork.

When Mira originally left, Ryan had been devastated. Hearing that she was taking him to the city for school was a dream come true. Even if he had to work part-time in Melvion City, pick up odd jobs on Sundays, or collect recycling in his spare time, he refused to stay stuck in this remote mountain village.

His biggest fear had been that without Mira's tutoring, his grades would slip, ruining his chances of getting into a good university and pushing him further away from her world.

With everyone gathered, Mira ushered her adoptive parents into the car, telling them to leave the rest of their old belongings behind.

Upon arriving in Melvion City, Mira settled the three of them into the rented apartment.

"Minnie, this place is so nice. How much is the rent?"

Sarah couldn't help but ask.

Walking away without a proper confrontation would have felt anticlimactic.

As for arguing with them, Mira no longer found it exhausting. Since she never actually lost the fights, she treated their tantrums as pure entertainment.

She could leave at any moment. Since Adrian had refused to officially add her to the family registry, she had zero legal ties to the Mercers.

Lacey glared at her. "How could you just bring your adoptive parents here? Why didn't you just give them a payout and be done with it?"

Because gratitude for saving my life and actual familial love aren't things you can buy with a check.

But Mira didn't bother answering Lacey; there was no point trying to explain basic human decency to someone like her.

On Monday, Mira met with Principal Maxwell Darrow to officially transfer Ryan into her old class. Meanwhile, having completely bypassed her midterms, Mira skipped straight into the senior class to begin preparing for the university entrance exams.

With Evelyn Crowe officially kicked out of the education system, a new homeroom teacher had taken over Mira's old class. Mira made a point to speak with all the substitute teachers, smoothly ensuring they would keep a close eye on Ryan's academic progress.
