"What?! You actually tried to drug Ethan? That's your brother, you sick animal!"
Lacey screamed, overwhelmed by a fresh wave of horror. She tried to lunge at Mara, but her exhausted body betrayed her, and she collapsed back onto the floor.
Smack! Mara backhanded her across the face.
"Who are you calling an animal?!
You're the one who sat there berating your eldest son for being disrespectful when he wouldn't drink it!
Regretting it now? Too bad.
He didn't drink the drug, Lacey. You did. I slipped it into your rice later that night."
Mara paused, a sinister, triumphant smile spreading across her lips.
"I clearly remember you telling me how delicious the food tasted when your precious baby served it to you."
She watched Lacey's face contort in utter revulsion and decided to twist the knife deeper.
"Do you know what Oblivion Drops do? It's a severe neurotoxin and memory eraser. It makes you highly susceptible to suggestion.
My dearest mother, for years I had to play the obedient little daughter, so it was incredibly satisfying to make you my mindless puppet for a night.
You signed every single one of your shares over to me without a second thought.
I bet if I had told you to call me Mom, you would have done it on your knees. Hahaha!"
Lacey raised a trembling hand to strike her, but Mara easily caught her wrist.
"Still trying to hit me?" Mara laughed. "Save your energy. You're going to need it when the guards toss you out onto the street.
I'm telling you this for your own good.
Your usefulness has been entirely drained. It's time for you to vacate the premises."
"You are all monsters! Karma will destroy you! You will rot in hell!"
"And that is the exact reason I married a pathetic fool like you, forcing Fiona to suffer in the shadows," Adrian shot back coldly.
"Everything this company achieved after that was built on my blood and sweat. Tricking you into funding my empire was my greatest strategic victory."
Lacey stared at the man she had worshiped for decades. This was the monster she had sacrificed her entire life for?
"I betrayed my own parents for you! I disowned my own children for you!
And you do this to me?! Adrian, you will die a miserable death!"
Smack! Adrian delivered a brutal, ringing backhand that sent stars exploding across Lacey's vision. Her ears shrieked with a high-pitched whine.
"I stopped Mara from hitting you, but it seems you really do deserve to be beaten."
Lacey let out a hollow, broken laugh.
Her entire life was nothing but a sickening joke.
