Impossible. She didn't have the brains for that.
Adrian picked up his phone and dialed again.
"Adrian, are you out of your mind? Are you going to let me sleep or not?" Lacey yelled. "Let me tell you right now, stop dreaming. I am not giving you a single dime."
How did she figure it out?
"No, I don't want your money. I really just miss you..."
"Cut the crap. Do you really think I don't know what you're plotting? You're a dinosaur, and you're trying to sell yourself for some cash? Get out of here and don't make me despise you."
Lacey hung up and powered off her phone.
Sell himself? Who was selling himself? Since when did Lacey dare to ride roughshod over him?
Adrian was muttering curses to himself when Fiona walked into the room carrying breakfast.
"Adrian, time to eat."
Seeing her brought him no joy whatsoever. "Where's Mara?"
"You forgot? With both of us away, she has to manage the company's affairs."
"The company is a total mess right now. What could she possibly do?"
"Well, they need a boss to hold the fort, don't they?"
"That's true. It's tough on her. Just make sure you tell her not to say anything stupid. When in doubt, play dumb."
"Shane, do you really have to slaughter us to the last man?"
"Don't blame me. The person who drove you off this cliff was yourself."
Since the board was already set, Shane didn't mind rubbing salt in the wound.
"Myself? You and your daughter calculated every move and forced me into this corner!"
"We've always been enemies. There's bad blood between us that can never be washed away. Didn't you know that? Yet you still chose to ally with me to destroy your own flesh and blood. I never understood it—is your own son really worse than your mortal enemy?"
Adrian was left speechless, completely unable to form a rebuttal.
"Ethan concentrated the power in his own hands because you were incredibly biased and he feared you would ruin the empire. The company was going to be his eventually. With Ethan's character, he would never have mistreated you in your old age. But you were too petty and narrow-minded to tolerate him. You brought this entirely on yourself. Who else can you blame?"
