Too Late to Hold Me Back novel Chapter 562

Only three men walked through the door. Mira's gaze immediately locked onto the man in the center.

He appeared to be in his early thirties, stepping half a pace ahead of his imposing bodyguards. He was the undisputed leader. Though slightly short in stature, his posture was immaculate, and his features were sharply handsome. A polite, warm smile played on his lips.

But Mira wasn't fooled. The men running that kind of organization were anything but benevolent. His two towering guards had completely forgettable faces—the kind that would vanish instantly in a crowded room.

Hank Whitlock offered a brief nod of acknowledgment as he entered. Lenny gestured for them to sit and poured out the coffee.

"I'm the regional director for Aegis Global Operations here in Mavaria," the man began smoothly. "My name is Hank Whitlock. These are my associates."

"A pleasure," Mira replied flatly. There was no need for introductions; they both knew exactly who she was.

"The recent incident was a profound misunderstanding," Hank said, his tone apologetic. "Ms. Porter provided us with incomplete intel, and my men were entirely blind to who you really are. I came here tonight simply to look you in the eye and say I'm sorry."

Mira studied him. "I was nearly abducted off the street, Mr. Whitlock. A simple 'I'm sorry' isn't going to cover it."

"Did half my men not pay with their lives today?" Hank asked, the polite smile never wavering.

He evaluated the young woman sitting across from him. She was slender, radiant, and dressed in a simple sundress with her hair pulled back into a casual ponytail. She looked like the girl next door. Yet the aura radiating from her was suffocatingly powerful. This was a woman used to holding all the cards.

Hank's subordinates had been complete fools to take the job. Aegis Global Operations survived by never making enemies of sovereign nations or deeply entrenched local powers. If they had succeeded yesterday, they would have become public enemy number one.

Realizing the absolute disaster they had narrowly avoided, Hank had pushed for this immediate truce.

"The only reason you have a mess to clean up is because I let you take Mara Mercer," Mira said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "I want her to wish she had never been born."

Hank's eyes widened in sudden realization. She hadn't just survived; she had weaponized his own organization against her enemy.
