"It's mostly because Jillian isn't exactly a knockout. No high-tier guy would look twice at her."
Leah said flatly.
To Mira's surprise, Elara nodded in agreement.
"High-tier? Are guys ranked into tiers now?"
"Of course."
Leah nodded.
"A top-tier guy comes from a wealthy family, is highly capable, and has a massive income.
"A second-tier guy comes from an average background but makes up for it with sheer talent and a high salary."
"So what about the guys in our class with average backgrounds?" Mira asked. "Where do they fall?"
"Third-tier, obviously. They don't even have an income yet."
"Notice how looks aren't even on the criteria list."
"Ugh, for guys, being handsome is just a bonus. It's really not that important."
Privately, Mira tried to calculate where Owen Lance fit into this ridiculous ranking system.
He was estranged from the Lance Family, so his family background wasn't an asset anymore. But his income was practically unmatched—that had to make him top-tier, right?
She shook her head, laughing at herself.
What was she thinking? This superficial criteria was just amusing gossip; she couldn't seriously apply it to her own boyfriend.
As they neared the dorm, they spotted Piper and Madison Wright.
"Look, aren't those your roommates?"
Leah called out.
Piper was walking empty-handed, while Madison struggled under the weight of Piper's heavy backpack.
Elara rolled her eyes. "Madison has been Piper's absolute lapdog for the past few days."
"Why is she sucking up to her?"
"Why chase after a rich guy?
"They'll pamper you when they're happy, and toss you aside the second they're bored. Why hand over control of your future like that?"
There was one harsh truth Mira kept to herself: neither of them had the stunning looks required to coast through life on beauty alone.
Back at the dorm, Mira quickly washed up and dove straight into her books. Her time was far too precious to waste.
Shortly after, Elara texted her a video clip with the caption: *They're so loud.*
Mira popped in her earbuds and hit play.
"Madison, great news! My boyfriend is visiting tomorrow. He bought me the latest designer necklace," Piper's voice rang out in the video.
"Really? Did he mention if he's bringing any of his friends?"
"He didn't mention it.
"But don't stress. Even if his friends don't tag along this time, they definitely will next time."
In the footage, Piper smugly admired the expensive diamond ring sparkling on her finger.
