Too Late to Hold Me Back novel Chapter 757

Leah trembled even violently.

After Mira left, Vanessa Voss also walked out. Since Jillian Lowe refused to be her lapdog anymore, Vanessa had become entirely isolated.

Now, only Leah and Jillian remained in the dorm.

"What is that godawful smell? It reeks of piss! Don't tell me you wet yourself out of fear?" Jillian sneered, looking down at Leah.

"You idiot. Why did you even cross Mira? Who paid you off to poison her?"

Truth be told, back when Jillian was still tailing Vanessa, she had been incredibly envious of Leah. Leah didn't have to do any dirty work and still got to reap the benefits of hanging around Mira.

Meanwhile, Jillian had spent half a semester serving Vanessa, gaining absolutely nothing while being treated like a servant and forced to do her dirty work.

Honestly, Jillian hated doing those things. Every time she acted out, she was terrified.

When she acted as a paid shill on the Aethelgard Social Forum to smear Mira, she had nearly been swept up by the authorities and thrown in jail.

She considered herself lucky and smart for giving vague, non-committal answers during the interrogation.

Unlike those idiots who charged headfirst into the crossfire and ended up with criminal records. Good luck finding a decent job after graduation with that hanging over them.

Would their wealthy backers help them find employment? Who knew if they'd even acknowledge their existence after graduation.

Some of those backers were likely too busy saving their own skins anyway. Luna Lance's recent downfall was the perfect example.

Jillian saw things clearly now. Vanessa merely wanted a slave to exploit.

Introduce her to high-society friends? Bullshit. Vanessa had only ever tossed her scraps to appease her.

Sure, Jillian knew she wasn't stunningly beautiful, and maybe she couldn't bag a billionaire, but she was still a student at a top-tier university. She was more than qualified to date a decent guy.

Yet, Vanessa had never set her up once. The only guys she brought around were superficial jerks who cared only about looks. And Vanessa always rubbed it in: *"Your looks are just too subpar; they're out of your league."*

Forget boyfriends—Jillian had worked like a dog for months, and Vanessa hadn't brought her to a single elite banquet. Not one glimpse into high society.
