Chapter 25 The Self-Slapping Apology
In his eyes, she saw an unbreakable determination-a silent promise to shield her no matter the cost.
A flicker of warmth stirred in Margaret’s heart, frozen for so long it had forgotten feeling.
For someone like her-a killer who lived in the shadows, who never knew kindness-the sensation was unfamiliar, strange.
She recognized it as a ghost of the original owner’s longing.
The original owner had grown up in the countryside, far away from her family, and she had been desperately longing for family love.
But that brief warmth was quickly buried. Margaret was after all, Reaper. Ruthless and untouchable.
A teasing smile touched her lips, light but edged. “One day I might really kill someone. Maybe burn some places down. You’d really take the blame for me?”
Edward’s gaze was steady as stone. To him, murder and arson were just everyday stuff. “Whatever you do, I stand with you. If you need to kill, I’ll hand you the knife.”
His voice was flat, stripped of emotion.
He was a man who didn’t flinch at bloodshed-not from others, not from himself.
Studying Margaret-now so fierce and fearless-Edward’s sharp brows drew together. “When did you become so different?”
Before, she was timid and quiet. She kept her head down, too afraid to speak or even meet someone’s eyes.
Yesterday, when he’d returned and found her missing, he’d turned the world upside down searching. He hadn’t slept, terrified he was already too late-that he’d find her broken.
Today, hearing she’d shown up at the engagement, he’d raced from the office, running every red light to get
here.
He was afraid that if he arrived even a step late, his timil sister would end up suffering more.
But when he arrived, he saw he’d worried for nothing.
She was whole and unharmed.
And more than that-she’d changed. She was bold now, fierce and unyielding.
She hadn’t been bullied. She’d been the one handing ou lessons.
That settled something heavy in his chest.
Hearing his question, Margaret didn’t panic at all. Her cool never broke.
“When your
father ignores you, your brothers turn their backs, and everyone walks all over you…. eventually, something in your head just breaks. Let’s jus say I snapped,” she replied, her tone frosty, laced with sarcasm.
She wasn’t afraid he’d see she wasn’t the same Margaret

Rebirth was too unbelievable. No one would buy it, even if she told them.

Hearing her brush it off so lightly, remembering how alone she’d been, Edward felt a sharp pain in his chest.
She had every right to hate him.
“I’m sorry. I was wrong. I owe you that.”
A sharp crack cut the air.
Edward slapped his own face-hard. Blood trickled from the corner of his mouth.
He was merciless to his enemies. He showed even less mercy to himself.
“Enough. Let’s go.”
Margaret didn’t say much else.
In her eyes, those brothers did owe the original girl that much-and more.
Brothers who failed to protect their sister, who believed lies and looked the other way? They deserved it.
Outside the hotel, a sleek black car stood waiting.
“Where to, Margaret?”
“Home. I’m exhausted. I need sleep,” Margaret said, covering a yawn.
She slid into the back seat and stretched out across the leather, loose and lazy.
Edward took the driver’s seat.
A few guests still lingering outside stared, jaws hanging open.
Edward-the man who ruled this city’s power and money-was driving someone himself.
But that wasn’t the most shocking part.
The real shock was Margaret-how effortlessly she took it for granted, as if ordering him around was the most natural thing in the world.
