Chapter One Hundred and Seventy-Four

"You are being annoying right now!" Asli snapped, her voice breaking despite herself. The heat behind her eyes finally won, tears blurring her vision.

"Shit! Asli, are you crying?" Ahmet rushed to her side and gathered her in his arms. "I’m sorry. I am freaking out right now and I know my tone is bad. I’m sorry."

She shoved at his chest, hard enough to make him stumble a step back. His touch felt wrong, too much, and too late.

"You are freaking out?" she shot back, her voice shaking. "Good to know." Good to know she wasn’t alone and good to know they were both humans after all.

He hesitated, then asked quietly, "Have you... taken a test?"

She stayed quiet. After scolding her for acting like a "thirteen-year-old normal girl," she was terrified to admit she hadn’t taken a test yet, or had no proof and no certainty of being with a child. She could already hear him saying it: that she knew nothing about womanhood, that she was foolish for not checking first.

Her jaw tightened. She looked away, refusing to meet his eyes. The answer was written all over her face.

"I’ll call my doctor. He needs to come now," Ahmet said.

She jerked out of his arms as if burned, her eyes widening in pure panic.

"No. No one can find out about us."

"Well, if you are pregnant, then they are eventually going to find out about us." He said, not unkindly, but firm. And those words didn’t comfort her one bit.

She realized how much she had been stupid. Why didn’t she check online immediately when she started sleeping with Ahmet?

He continued, "You have to take the test. That’s the only way we can be sure of this. Whatever the result is, we’ll figure it out. The only thing they can do to us is..."

"Is to kill us." She finished the sentence for him but he shook his head.

"Well, for my side, I am sure they will just compete to have me removed as the heir. Aside from Markus no one can match me."

The thought crept in and refused to leave, she couldn’t imagine herself pregnant.

For the first time in her life, fear wrapped its fingers around her throat. Death had never scared her; she had made peace with it long ago. But if there were two of them... if there was a child, an innocent, helpless child, then dying was no longer hers alone to face.

She knew nothing about motherhood. Nothing about protecting something so small. And that was what terrified her the most.

She could deal with leaving everything behind and escaping. She could even deal with being alone.

But what could she do alone with a child?

All she had ever known was this life. She didn’t know how to be gentle. She didn’t know how to nurture.

Ahmet’s phone began to buzz, drawing her back to her setting. Ahmet might have almost forgotten he was in the middle of something before she had called.

He was going to be doomed if she was actually pregnant. What the hell made him think she’d be taking contraceptives? She had no mother to talk to her about these things. Asli wasn’t raised to embrace her womanhood.

He practically forced that out of her. She was sure he was the reason she even began to have feelings for the opposite gender.

But was that not common sense? Did she not know she was supposed to take contraceptives? Was she supposed to know? She has no friends.
