Chapter 183: Tomorrow

Chapter One Hundred and Eighty-Three

Asli shut the door behind her with more force than necessary and leaned into it for a second, eyes closed, and her breath shallow. The night clung to her skin. She replayed everything, from her mission to their arguments. Ahmet’s voice still lodged somewhere in her chest. She was having too many thoughts and too many feelings she didn’t have time for.

She stripped out of her clothes and stepped under the shower, letting the water pound against her shoulders until it almost hurt. The heat didn’t wash anything away, but it steadied her hands. That was something. It felt good.

When she came back into the room, a towel wrapped tight around her head, her steps slowed.

Something sat on the bed. She could see that it was placed roughly and angrily.

Her gaze snapped up, scanning the room, every muscle tightening on instinct. The windows were locked. The door was still closed. No scent that didn’t belong. There was no sign of a struggle. Then, probably it was all in her head.

It may be her nanny, then. It had to be. So obviously it wasn’t placed on the bed angrily.

The tension slipped just a little. A smile tugged at her mouth before she could stop it. It was small, fleeting, and unguarded. She crossed the room and, without really thinking, she tossed her towel onto the bed, covering the object completely, as if it didn’t deserve another look. As if ignoring it. She didn’t need it. Just because she knew she wasn’t pregnant.

Disappointment was tucked in her chest but she disregarded it as soon as it came. She crossed to the desk, fingers already reaching for the files. She needed the familiar rhythm; mark the next mission, review the designs, and drown herself in work until the noise in her head went quiet.

She didn’t get the chance as a knock sounded. Before she could respond, the handle turned.

Cold slid down her spine, sharp and instant. Every muscle locked, and every instinct screaming at once. The air in the room shifted, heavy, oppressive, and she knew. She didn’t need to look back.

What was he doing here?

He never came to her apartment. And on the rare occasions he did, he never crossed this line. He never entered her bedroom before.

"How was your mission?" he asked. That was new. He had never asked her this before.

"Sir." She called out as she stood to face him. "It went well." She took a few steps towards him.

"I believe," he said, "you are prepared to face your enemy."

Her heart stuttered. Once. Twice.

So this was it. The moment she had been raised for. Trained for. Conditioned to want. And yet her chest tightened, something uneasy pressing against her ribs.

Prepared or being offered up. She hadn’t finished answering when he walked past her and straight to the bed.

Asli’s breath caught.

He sat down, uninvited, and unhurried, as though the room... her space, belonged to him by right. The mattress dipped under his weight.

Her heart skipped violently, slamming against her ribs as if trying to escape.

Because the bed wasn’t empty.

And suddenly, the room felt too small to breathe in.

She began. "Sir..."

His hand paused midair.

She hated that pause more than anything. The way his gaze slid to her, sharp and knowing, as if he’d felt the shift in her energy, the fracture in her obedience.

"What is it?" he asked mildly. This was also a first too.
