CHAPTER 407: BRING A GOD TO HER KNEES

EMBER’S POV

“You don’t want to wake her, Ember.”

“|—”

“Are you actually trying to get us killed?” She leans across the table, the fear back and as naked as the sun. “Listen to me, you foolish girl. There is no waking Sapphire without waking Isolde. You don’t get to just reach for that god without lighting a beacon across the entire East. The second you do, every single soul who ever carried that essence feels it-and the Queen feels it most of all. Waking your wolf is begging for an execution. It’s sending up a flare reading ‘yoo-hoo, here I am, come slaughter me.’ You cannot have one without the other. The very power you think you want is exactly what will pull your death right down on your head.” Her voice drops. “That is the trap of you. That is the trap Esmerelda saw the second you drew breath. The only thing in this world that can save you from Isolde is the exact thing that will bring her straight to your door.”

The room has gone cold.

“But I’ve already touched her,” I say slowly. “Sapphire. I’ve reached her. More than once-not for long, but when she comes, it’s all the way. She hits with such a breathtaking force. And the East hasn’t come for me.” I frown, chasing the hole in her logic.

“Brushing against her for a few seconds is completely different from waking her as an active, permanent force!” Devika snaps, her panic twisting into pure condescension. “Trust me, Ember. For once in your miserable life, trust me when I say the East’s wolf is better left dead.”

I open my mouth to fire back, but Silas beats me to it.

“When was the first time you felt your wolf?” Silas cuts in, his voice hard and entirely focused. “When exactly did you channel her?”

I blink, my mind going back to the dreadful moment Gale had me pinned to the dirt.

“The first time-the real first time-was with my ex-husband. Gale Crawford. Well, he’s dead now. But that night, his father unleashed an ambush on us, and Gale got to me. He pinned me to the ground and just kept strangling me. He was going to kill me.” I take a ragged breath. “And maybe I could have taken that. I was used to it. He could choke me, he could hit me, he could have driven a knife straight through my heart, and I would have let it happen. But he fucking dared to mention my baby. My poor baby that he killed. The child he punished me for. He told me I should have died alongside them, and-Goddess, something inside me went absolutely murderous.”

My hands have gone ice-cold, trembling where they rest.

“For the first time ever, I felt a force I’d only heard other wolves talk about. This magnificent, insurmountable rage. I grew claws, Uncle. Real ones. I mauled him. I tore into him with every fed-up, broken bone in my body, and I did not regret it for a single second. There was blood, and it was so incredibly satisfying.” I look at my mother now, my voice dropping to a hard, demanding octave. “How was that possible? You said the pills made it impossible. You said the pills made me useless.

Silas has leaned forward, that shrewd focus sharpening his whole face.

“What broke through,” he says slowly. “In that moment. What was it you felt?”

“Everything,” I say. “Grief. Rage. Enough hate to burn the world down. I wanted him dead, I wanted it more than I’d ever wanted anything in my life-”

“Strong emotion,” Silas murmurs, working it like a lock. “It was not the pills failing. The feeling overpowered them. It wasn’t chance she came for you at that moment. It was that in that one moment you wanted something badly enough, hard enough, with enough will behind it, to reach past years of suppression and grab your wolf by the throat.” His eyes narrow.” Willpower. Strength of feeling. A want too big to leash.”

“And a mind shrewd enough to carry the sovereign bitch,” Devika finishes. “That’s the other half of it, brother. The Maiden doesn’t only need a strong hand. She needs a worthy one. A will she can’t break and a mind she can’t outmanoeuvre. No wonder she forged psychopaths like Isolde. Sapphire has spent an eternity being carried by queens. She will not be carried by anything less than one, and she will fight you the whole way to prove you’re not.” She looks at me, almost pitying. “You’ve felt it, haven’t you? When you reach her. She lets you in for a moment, and then she throws you out. She holds you for a breath, and then she’s gone, and you can’t stay in her no matter how you claw at it.”

“Yes,” I whisper, because it’s exactly true. “I’ve felt her in specific moments. The worst ones. But I can never – I reach her, and I can’t hold her. I can’t stay. It slips. She won’t-” I stop,

because there’s no dignified way to say she won’t let me.

My wolf won’t let me wield her.

“Because she is as proud as they come,” Devika says. “She is a war-god, Ember, ancient and undefeated, and she has been made to sleep in a child and drugged docile for years, and she is furious about it, and she looks at you – soft, frightened, half-formed, everything you were beaten into being – and she does not yet see a queen. She sees the cage. If you want to wield a wolf that powerful, if you want her to kneel in you instead of clawing at the bars, then

You’ll have to become someone she has no choice but to bow to. You’ll have to conquer her.”

“How,” I breathe, and it comes out fearful, small, because this is the whole of it, this is the

thing my life apparently turns on. “How do I learn to bring a god to her knees?”

And no one answers.

Because there is no answer.
