Chapter 127: Chapter 127 The Fake Savior Exposed

The old man’s expression didn’t change much. It was more a look of certainty than suspicion.

Samantha studied him carefully. Seeing nothing unusual, she slowly smiled and nodded.

"It’s been so long. Perhaps you don’t quite remember me. After all, it was a charity clinic organized by the group. There were many people coming and going, with medical staff from different departments participating. It’s understandable if you don’t remember."

Truthfully, she couldn’t even remember which patients she had treated.

The charity clinic had been organized partly because she knew the media would be present. Making an appearance had only benefited her image.

There had been many elderly patients seeking treatment that day, and she hadn’t paid much attention to any of their faces.

Still, since Oliver had personally confirmed that she had saved Matthew’s life, she intended to make full use of that favor.

Samantha’s expression was completely composed.

Matthew, however, shot a sharp look at Ryan, who had been standing quietly beside her the entire time.

"Ryan," he said slowly, "your wife is quite something."

Did they really think that because he had been critically ill back then, he was too delirious to recognize his own savior?

He truly hadn’t expected it.

The young lady accompanying Ryan had the audacity to claim credit for saving his life without the slightest hesitation, acting as though it were an established fact.

What did she take him for?

A senile old fool?

Blind and deaf?

In Matthew’s eyes, anyone who attended such an occasion at Ryan’s side and was personally brought before him would naturally be assumed to be Ryan’s wife.

Ryan met the old man’s gaze calmly.

"You’re too kind, Mr. Brown. I came today to celebrate your birthday. As for the matter you two are discussing, I know very little about it."

Samantha felt that Matthew’s words carried an odd undertone.

But since the old man wasn’t openly expressing displeasure, she assumed he genuinely regarded her as Ryan’s wife.

Her mood immediately improved.

Smiling warmly, she said, "I wasn’t expecting anything in return. Seeing that you’re healthy and well is more than enough."

Matthew had weathered countless storms in his lifetime.

How could he possibly fail to see through the schemes of the younger generation?

Out of respect for the Knight family and consideration for Ryan’s reputation, he didn’t expose her on the spot.

But he had no interest in continuing the conversation.

Turning away, he said coldly, "Very well. Go enjoy yourselves."

Ryan immediately understood the old man’s attitude.

A shadow flickered across his dark eyes.

With a slight nod, he turned and left.

Samantha followed behind, completely confused.

What had gone wrong?

This was nothing like what she had expected.

She had assumed Matthew would be deeply grateful and treat her as an honored guest in front of everyone.

Why had he been so indifferent?

"Ryan, does Mr. Brown dislike me?" she asked uneasily. "He didn’t even seem interested in learning my name."

Without slowing his pace, Ryan glanced at her casually.

"You’re overthinking it."

Since Samantha didn’t know Matthew well, she accepted Ryan’s explanation.

Perhaps today simply wasn’t the right occasion for a grand display of gratitude.

Surely there would be other opportunities in the future.

Her smile returned.

"You’re right. I never expected anything in return anyway."

"Mm."

*****

Oliver had been running around all day without a moment’s rest.

The banquet hall was nearly full.

Members of the Brown family were busy greeting guests one after another.

Taking advantage of a brief break, Oliver stepped into the lounge to check on his grandfather.

The moment he entered, he saw the old man’s thunderous expression.

Walking over, he asked, "Grandpa, who upset you?"

Matthew immediately smacked Oliver’s thigh with his cane.

"And you have the nerve to ask? You promised you’d bring my savior here. Where is she? Instead, some random woman came in claiming the credit!"

Oliver frowned. "Who?"

Matthew sneered. "Ryan’s wife."
