The reason Rose had reached that conclusion was obvious to everyone else as well.
After Ryan spoke those words, Samantha—who had initially been displeased by his stepping in to help Rose and by the physical contact between them—immediately relaxed.
She even shot Rose a mocking glance.
A sweet smile spread across her face.
To put it simply, Ryan had acted entirely in Samantha’s best interests.
He had stopped James from exposing certain truths and protected Samantha’s reputation from being damaged.
As for Rose?
She didn’t factor into the equation at all.
"That’s right. Don’t fall for someone else’s trap. Some people are just waiting for you to say something that benefits them."
Oliver was finally beginning to process everything. He glanced at Rose as he spoke.
He was genuinely shocked that Trevor had openly admitted he liked her.
He couldn’t help wondering when Rose had managed to get close to Trevor behind everyone’s backs.
The more he thought about it, the more disapproving his gaze became.
"Some people have lost even their most basic sense of morality. They haven’t even settled their own personal affairs, yet they’re already rushing to attach themselves to someone powerful."
What right did Rose have?
Her divorce wasn’t even finalized, and she was already looking for her next relationship.
And of all people, she had set her sights on Trevor.
Wasn’t that a betrayal of Ryan?
Diana, who had been listening from the doorway, immediately sneered.
"Are you blind, or are you just missing a few screws? There’s a homewrecker standing right beside you, and somehow that’s not the problem? You’re so good at double standards. What is it? Are you trying to flatter your way up the ladder, or do you actually think that pile of crap smells good?"
Diana was never one to hold back.
Every word hit like a slap.
Oliver had never been spoken to like that before.
His face darkened instantly.
Samantha knew perfectly well that Diana’s insult included her.
Still, she assumed Diana was simply lashing out because Rose had embarrassed herself today.
Fixing Diana with a cold stare, she said, "Miss Diana, please don’t drag innocent people into this. Oliver didn’t mean any harm."
By then, Rose had already regained her composure.
As soon as she steadied herself, she pulled her hand from Ryan’s grasp as though it had touched something poisonous.
Trevor had already let go.
His touch hadn’t bothered her.
Ryan lowered his eyes briefly, watching her movement. His expression remained unreadable.
Rose turned to Samantha. "Of course he means no harm to you. He’s practically guarding your territory for you. You’ve spoken so kindly on his behalf—it seems you really know how to take care of your people."
It sounded like she was defending Oliver.
In reality, she was exposing Samantha’s motives.
"Rose, you—"
Oliver glared at her.
When it came to verbal attacks, Rose was every bit as ruthless.
"Arguing with a woman is beneath you, Mr. Brown. It makes you look rather petty."
Trevor stepped in front of Rose.
His calm words instantly left Oliver red-faced.
Oliver felt completely stifled.
Trevor then turned toward James, who was still visibly furious.
"Chairman Morris has already made her position clear. Mr. Taylor, let’s end this gracefully and save everyone some dignity."
James’s expression darkened.
Trevor turned to Rose. "Shall we leave first?"
Rose didn’t spare Ryan another glance. "Alright."
Just like that, they walked away.
Not as strangers.
Worse than strangers.
They weren’t even worth exchanging a greeting anymore.
Ryan made no attempt to stop her.
The warmth from Rose’s arm still lingered faintly on his fingertips.
He slipped his hands into his pockets and watched the two figures leave together—one tall, one slender.
For some reason, they seemed unexpectedly compatible.
A strange sense of harmony existed between them.
Ryan narrowed his eyes.
His expression was impossible to read.
"It looks like she’s pretty confident now that she’s managed to catch Mr. Robinson’s attention." Samantha spoke casually.
Ryan said nothing.
James looked even more displeased.
The veins at his temples throbbed visibly.
And to think he had once shown Rose some leniency.
