“You can’t arrest someone just because you feel like it–there has to be evidence. We’ve reviewed the details you provided, but as of now, there’re insufficient grounds for an arrest. We’ll be in touch if anything changes.” With that, the officers turned and left the
room.
Freya bit back her frustration as she faced the police. There was nothing she could do while they were following procedure.
“Well, now we wait for the police to do their thing. Arabella should be taken in soon enough,” Carter said, trying to soothe Freya’s temper.
“Arrest is too good for her! If my brother were in town, I wouldn’t have called the cops at all–I’d have made sure she got a taste of her own medicine, starting with a broken leg!” Freya hissed through clenched teeth.
“I know, she’s vicious. Who would’ve thought she’d get her brother to do something like that?” Carter replied, matching her anger.
“Don’t act all righteous now–you were the first one running out of there! If you’d stayed and helped, maybe things would’ve turned out different,” Freya shot back, glaring at him.
Carter sighed in defeat. “You know I’m no fighter. I tried to pull you away with me, but you refused to budge. What else could I do? At least by leaving, I could call for help. If we’d both stayed, who would’ve gotten you to the hospital? Who would’ve handled everything afterward?”
He believed he’d made the right call–Freya was the one who’d misjudged the situation.
“So now it’s my fault for not listening to you?” Freya’s expression darkened as she stared him down.
Seeing the storm in her eyes, Carter decided not to push it. Now wasn’t the time to argue. He turned away and took a seat in the chair farthest from her bed.
Edward watched his mother quietly, feeling like she wasn’t the same person he knew. Trying to reason with her now would only make things worse.
“Mom, Dad, I’m going to head out. Get some rest,” Edward said, eager to leave before he became the next target of her anger.
“Leaving already?” Freya’s attention snapped to him. “What’s the rush? Going back to report to that little witch?”
“Mom, how can you say that?” Edward replied, guilt flashing across his face.
Freya didn’t miss it, but she didn’t care. “Go ahead and warn her if you want. I’ve already filed a report. Even if she grows wings, she won’t fly out of this one.
“Do me a favor and pass this on to Arabella–if she knows what’s good for her, she’ll come here and apologize properly. It she makes it sincere, maybe I’ll consider asking for a lighter sentence.” Freya’s eyes were cold and steady on Edward.
“Just focus on getting better,” Edward said, keeping his own anger in check. Without another word, he walked out.
Once he was gone, Freya turned back to Carter. “Don’t just sit there. Get me some water.”
Carter stood up and poured her a cup from the pitcher on the side table.
“Harper texted again asking why we’re not back. Last time I told her you were getting some tests done, but she’s getting suspicious. What should I say?” Carter waited for Freya’s instructions.

“She can’t find out I’m hurt. Tell her the doctors want to keep me for observation and recovery. Say I’ll be home as soon as I’m cleared and that she shouldn’t worry,” Freya directed.
“Alright, I’ll call her now,” Carter said, pulling out his phone.
“Wait–actually, you should go home and stay with her. If she’s alone too long, she’ll overthink things. If you’re there, she’s more likely to believe everything’s fine.” Freya watched him closely.
Carter didn’t mind leaving–staying at the hospital wasn’t exactly comfortable. “Okay, I’ll head back now.”
“Mm.”
Back in his own room, Edward hesitated for a long time before finally calling Arabella. “Arabella, there’s something important I need to tell you.”
“What is it? You sound really serious,” Arabella replied, picking up on his tone.
“I just came from Freya’s hospital room. She says her leg was broken by your brother.” Edward paused, letting the words hang
“Yes, that’s true,” Arabella admitted without hesitation.
“Just tell me what’s on your mind, Edward,” she said softly when he didn’t continue.
She knew he must be struggling–to him, both she and Freya were family.
But Freya had pushed her to this point.
“It’s nothing… I know you must have had your reasons. I’m not blaming you.” He took a breath. “I called because Freya’s pretty badly hurt, and she’s filed a police report. The cops already came by to ask questions. She says she wants you arrested and charged.
“She also told me to give you a message–if you go to her and apologize properly now, she might ask for a lighter sentence.”

I started the novel with great interest. In the beginning the storyline was captivating. Then I feel that the more the story advances, the twists were no longer great. Moreover I don't like Arabella s personality, cold, distant......
