“Even if you tell me all that, Dr. Macdonald, I likely won’t remember it. Why don’t you just tell Matthew, and he can keep track of everything for me.” Robert seized the chance to manufacture an opportunity for the two younger people.

Arabella’s brows drew together almost imperceptibly. On the surface, Robert’s words sounded reasonable, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that he was being deliberately calculating.

She instinctively glanced toward Matthew, who was already looking back at her. He then spoke up, “I’ve noted all the instructions. I’ll make sure to remind Grandfather.”

“Good.” Seeing Matthew’s composed expression, Arabella suddenly wondered if she had been reading too much into the situation.

Robert couldn’t help but shoot a brief, chastising look at Matthew. This boy–can’t he see I’m trying to create more reasons for you two to talk?

“Dr. Macdonald, if I have any questions later, I’ll have Matthew get in touch with you directly,” Robert added, not one to let an opportunity slip.

“Robert, you’re always welcome to contact me yourself,” Arabella replied, inwardly sighing. So, her initial instinct had been correct.

“Oh, I wouldn’t want to trouble you directly. I’d feel much better if Matthew arranged things.” Robert wasn’t about to release his grip on any plausible reason to connect them.

“Grandfather, it’s getting late, we should be heading back,” Matthew interjected, not giving Robert another opening. His grandfather was being far too transparent. If they didn’t leave now, he dreaded what Robert might say next.

Robert shot Matthew a look of mild exasperation. This ungrateful boy–he was only trying to help him out.

“Do you have pressing matters at home?” Ryan inquired, sounding slightly disappointed.

“Grandfather still needs ample quiet and rest,” Matthew offered as a convenient excuse.

Ryan couldn’t very well insist they stay, so he nodded. “Of course. Health must come first.”

Hearing that, Robert had little choice but to concede. “Very well, we’ll take our leave now.”

Before going, Robert turned once more to Arabella. “Dr. Macdonald, you must visit us when you have some free time. I’ll make sure Matthew looks after you properly.”

The corner of Arabella’s mouth twitched slightly. Phrased like that by Robert, should she agree or not?

Before she could formulate a graceful way to sidestep the Invitation, Naomi spoke up first, “Don’t worry, Robert, We’ll be sure to visit you often.”

“Good, you’re all welcome anytime,” Robert said, his words directed at Naomi but his gaze lingering meaningfully on Arabella, his eyes full of clear expectation.

Arabella felt a wave of helplessness. The look in Robert’s eyes was so hopeful that a refusal would have felt like a personal slight Sensing Arabella’s discomfort, Matthew stepped in again. “Grandfather, we really should be going.”

Arabella offered Matthew a small, grateful smile. She recognized he was helping her extract herself from an awkward position.

Matthew gave a nearly imperceptible nod in return and moved to assist Robert in preparing to leave.

That brief, silent exchange, however, did not escape Robert’s notice. A thoughtful glint appeared in his eyes.

It seemed his grandson did indeed regard Dr. Macdonald a little differently. Perhaps there really was potential here.

Feeling somewhat satisfied with this observation, Robert didn’t press further. He simply bid a warm farewell to Ryan and Lena. “I’ll be on my way now.”

“Take care, get plenty of rest. We’ll see each other again soon,” Ryan and Lena said in unison.

After one last, fond look at Arabella, Robert departed with Matthew.

Shortly after seeing Robert and Matthew off, Alfred strode back into the living room.

Arabella saw he had returned alone and glanced behind him, then looked at Alfred with a questioning expression. Hadn’t he gone to rally reinforcements?

Alfred spread his hands in a gesture of defeat and shook his head.

Understanding that his mission for backup had failed, Arabella simply assumed their parents were occupied and didn’t dwell on it. The matter wasn’t urgent, after all.

‘Grandfather, Grandmother, we should probably head back too.” They had taken up much of their grandparents‘ afternoon, and the elderly couple needed their rest.

‘Alright, dear. Do visit more often when you can,” Lena said with a warm smile.

‘And give some thought to what we discussed earlier,” Ryan added, not one to let the subject drop entirely.

Arabella was momentarily at a loss for words. So Robert might have left, but here was another advocate for the match.

Having been firmly corrected by Ryan earlier, Alfred didn’t dare say much now. He simply stated, “Grandfather, I’ll take Arabella

home now.”

f he couldn’t change his grandfather’s mind, his only recourse was to go home and enlist their parents‘ help.

But his parents‘ reactions had been odd. Why did they both keep saying they’d discuss everything at home tonight whenever he ried to broach the subject?

‘Fine, you’ve been running around all day. Go home and get some rest yourselves,” Ryan said with a wave, dismissing them.

After saying their goodbyes, Alfred led Arabella out.
