Robert had never been particularly impressed with Miles. He immediately backtracked. We won’t be doing the treatment today, after all. Miles, you may leave.”

He’d felt unwell for days, yet Miles hadn’t been able to pinpoint a specific cause. The doctor had simply prescribed a regimen of medications that, after consistent use, seemed to have done absolutely nothing.

Since conventional medicine wasn’t helping, Robert had taken matters into his own hands and asked his butler to discreetly seek out a highly recommended specialist in alternative and complementary medicine. By his estimation, that consultant should be arriving shortly.

Miles had already begun setting up for the routine examination. Robert’s sudden reversal forced him to halt midaction. He looked helplessly toward Matthew, his expression faintly. accusatory, as if to say the lack of progress wasn’t his fault but the patient’s noncompliance.

Seeing his grandfather dig in his heels, Matthew took a steadying breath, adopting a placating tone. Grandpa, I understand your frustration that you’re not feeling better. But Miles is one of the top internal medicine specialists in the city. If you cooperate patiently, we will see results.

Haven’t I cooperated enough?Robert retorted, his irritation flaring. It’s been days. I keep having this persistent, peculiar sensation on my lips, and he can’t explain it. The medicine hasn’t touched it. I may be old, but I’m not a fool to be strung along.

Everyone just go. Don’t worry about me anymore today,Robert stated firmly, resolved not to undergo another fruitless session. The strange, unnerving feeling was a constant source of discomfort and anxiety.

Miles had been on the case for a while with zero improvement; his skills clearly didn’t live up to his reputation.

Criticized so directly and with no real defense, Miles flushed a deep red. In that moment, he wished the floor would open up and swallow him.

Matthew understood his grandfather’s frustration perfectly; he wanted Robert cured more than anyone. But for this perplexing set of symptoms, neither Miles nor the other senior consultants they’d brought in had been able to identify a root cause.

Stopping treatment altogether, however, risked letting Robert’s condition deteriorate. He tried reasoning again, his voice patient. Grandpa, I know we’re only managing stability right now, but until we find a new approach, you need to continue with the current protocol. You can’t just abandon it.

He had already initiated a quiet, international search for experts in rare disorders, but so far, no one had accepted the case.

Robert shot him a look of pure disdain. Who said I’m abandoning treatment? I said I don’t need you people treating me. I’ve already engaged the best specialist in the field.

If modern medicine had nothing to offer, he was willing to explore other avenues. Perhaps a different diagnostic lens could uncover what was wrong.

The grandfather and grandson were at an impasse when a soft knock sounded at the door. The butler entered. The specialist you were expecting has arrived.”

Hearing this, Robert’s demeanor brightened immediately. Show them in, please.”

The butler nodded and opened the door wider, ushering in a slender figure.

When Robert had mentioned engaging the best specialist in the field, Miles had naturally pictured an elder statesman of medicineperhaps a distinguished, silverhaired physician.

The person who followed the butler in, however, was a young woman who looked like she might still be in college.

Every eye in the room turned toward Arabella. She was tall and slender, with a naturally pretty face. Her hair was pulled back in a simple, efficient ponytail, giving her a clean, capable appearance. Her eyes were particularly strikingbright and perceptive, holding a depth that seemed unusual for someone her age.

When Matthew’s eyes landed on her, he couldn’t suppress a slight frown. This was no doctor. She was clearly just a girl, young and obviously inexperienced.

At her age, she probably hadn’t even finished her undergraduate degree.

Even if Robert was rebelling against their methods, there was no need to bring in someone like this for a charade. If he wanted to make a point, he could have at least found someone older who looked the part.

any young woman didn’t resemble had ever encountered.

Unbeknownst to them, as they scrutinized her, Arabella was conducting her own swift assessment of the room. The elderly man in bed was clearly the patient from the file.

The younger man standing beside him, who bore a familial resemblance and radiated a CEO’s intensity, was undoubtedly the grandson. He was handsome, yes, but the cold, dismissive way he looked at everything immediately put her off.

What a waste of good looks. His attitude ruins it.
