What could have been dismissed as a coincidence at first became impossible to ignore once she turned toward the private road leading to Lucas‘ villa.
Her eyes narrowed. Arabella slowed her car and gradually pulled over onto the shoulder. She got out and walked straight toward the vehicle that had been tailing her, signaling for it to stop.
“Why are you following me?” Arabella demanded, cutting to the chase.
“Who says we’re following you? It’s a free road–maybe we’re headed the same way,” the driver shot back defensively.
Taking in their flustered expressions and evasive eyes, Arabella let out a cold laugh. “Then tell me, what’s up ahead?”
The men in the car hesitated, glancing at each other, unable to reply.
“Ray, what now?”
“We’re made. Let’s move now.”
“This spot isn’t isolated enough. If someone sees us, it’s trouble.”
“Do it now while it’s clear. If we wait, someone might come.”
“Right.”
After a rushed exchange, they piled out of the car.
Arabella watched them coldly. So they really were here for her.
But who were they?
“Who sent you?” Arabella asked, her voice steady.
“You don’t need to know. After today, you won’t be asking any questions,” Ray replied, then signaled to the others. “Grab her now. Make it quick.”
“Got it.” The men immediately lunged toward Arabella.
Arabella swung her backpack hard, hitting one of them squarely in the face and creating an opening. She turned and ran–she couldn’t let them take her.
“Don’t let her get away!”
“Grab her!”
Arabella sprinted for her life, the men closing in behind her.
Just then, a car sped around the curve and screeched to a halt right in front of her.
A figure jumped out and pulled her close. “Arabella! What’s going on?”
Hearing the familiar voice, Arabella looked up in shock. “Alfred! I don’t know; they just-”

Alfred pushed Arabella behind him, his demeanor turning icy. The thought of what might have happened if he’d arrived even a minute later made his blood run cold.
“Back off now, unless you want to regret it–ah!” Before Ray could finish, Alfred’s fist connected with his jaw, sending a trickle of blood from the corner of his mouth.
“Get him!” Enraged, the others charged at Alfred.
But within moments, they were all on the ground, groaning in pain.
Alfred planted his foot on Ray’s chest. “Who are you working for?”
“I-” Ray gritted his teeth. “We just saw she was alone and thought we could shake her down for some cash.”
“Does she look like she’s carrying cash?” Alfred frowned, not buying it for a second. Arabella kept a low profile–driving an ordinary sedan, dressed simply–nothing that would mark her as an easy target.
“Alfred, they were waiting for me,” Arabella said quietly.
She might not know the details, but she was sure they’d tailed her deliberately. And from what they’d said earlier, their intentions were far from just robbery.
If it wasn’t personal, then it had to be a hired job.
Arabella studied their faces. She was certain she’d never seen them before. So it had to be the latter.
“Tell me the truth,” Alfred demanded, pressing down harder.
“Ugh!” Ray coughed, blood staining his lips.
“Sir, we really just saw an opportunity! We were wrong–we won’t do it again,” the others began pleading, their words tumbling out in a panic.
“Yeah, she was coming out of Horizon Corp–we figured she had to have money!”
They started babbling excuses, each more implausible than the last.
Arabella’s expression remained cold. “Save it for the police.”
Before long, the police arrived and took the men away.
“Arabella, are you okay?” Alfred looked her over, his own nerves still on edge.
“I’m fine. You got here just in time.” Her face was serious. “Alfred, something’s off about this. I think someone hired them.”
