Arabella frowned. “What exactly are you worried about?”

Alfred kept his eyes on the road ahead. “The letter she left–it was calm. Too calm. My gut says she’s not as fine as she made herself sound. And then there’s Ruby in the picture, so…” He glanced at her. “I’m just… concerned about you.”
Arabella raised an eyebrow. “Alfred. Don’t worry about me. She’s moved out. We’re not gonna be in each other’s space. And it’s not like I’m some easy target.”
He caught the confidence in her expression and smiled despite himself. “Alright. As long as you’re aware.”
She shrugged. “I’ve got it handled.”
“I’ll keep someone on Ruby anyway.” His tone made it clear that wasn’t up for debate. He wasn’t about to let Ruby pull anything.
They talked a bit more as the car wound through the city, and before long, Alfred pulled up in front of the pharmaceutical company.
Arabella opened the door. “Thanks for the ride. Be safe out there.”
Alfred nodded. “Go on in. Have the car service pick you up tonight.”
She waved a hand. “I’ll figure it out. Don’t worry.”
He waited until she disappeared through the glass doors before pulling away.
Arabella walked into her office, tossing her bag onto the chair.
A soft knock came a few minutes later. Chloe entered, setting a cup of coffee on the desk. “Morning.”
Arabella glanced up. “Thanks. How’s Bruce doing?”
Chloe folded her hands. “He’s been in the lab nonstop the past few days. Won’t let anyone in. Hasn’t come out with anything either, so no one really knows where he’s at.”
Arabella’s brow lifted slightly. “Stuck?”
Chloe shrugged. “Not sure. Could be. Could be close to something. No one knows.”

Arabella nodded slowly. “Got it.”
Chloe hesitated. “So… we just wait?”
“I’ll check in on him tomorrow.”
“You want me to come?”
Arabella shook her head. “No need.”

Chloe nodded. “Alright. If that’s all, I’ll get back to it.”

Arabella gave a small nod and watched her go. She took a sip of coffee, then picked up the file waiting on her desk.

Over at Cloudy Design, Florence stepped off the elevator and walked through the open floor plan toward Naomi’s corner office. She felt a small wave of relief when she spotted her through the glass–still here. Still working.
She knocked softly.
“Come in.”
Florence pushed the door open. “Naomi. You have a minute?”
Naomi looked up, surprise flickering across her face. “Mom? What are you doing here?”
Florence crossed the room and sat on the small sofa against the wall. “I wanted to see you.”
Naomi followed slowly, lowering herself into the chair across from her. Her expression was guarded. “You’re here because of the letter.”
It wasn’t a question.
Florence studied her for a moment, then spoke quietly, “Naomi. Is this really what Have you thought it through?”

Naomi bit her lip. A long pause. Then she nodded. “Yes.”
Florence let out a slow breath. “Then we respect that.”
Naomi blinked. “You… You’re not going to stop me?”

She had braced for a fight. For guilt trips. For Florence to beg her to come home.
Florence shook her head. “If this is what you need, we won’t stand in your way”

Naomi’s chest tightened. She kept her voice steady, but inside, she was off–balance. “Then why are you here?”
To take back the company? That had to be it.
Florence reached out and took her hand. “Sweetheart. I didn’t want you to leave. None of us did. But your father, your brothers, and I talked it over. If this is your decision, we’re going to support you.” She squeezed gently. “Have you found a place yet?”
Naomi swallowed. “I left in a hurry. I don’t have anything set up yet. I was just going to stay at the office for a while.”
If the
company was taken
away from her, she would have nowhere else to go.
Florence’s expression shifted–concern, disapproval. “That won’t work. You won’t sleep well. You’ll run yourself down. Work is already demanding enough.” She paused, thinking. “How about this. I’ll find you an apartment near the office. Something nice. I’ll have it cleaned and set up today. You can move in tonight. Sound okay?”
Naomi stared at her. “You’re… getting me an apartment? Near here?”
Her mind struggled to catch up.
They weren’t taking the company. They were giving her a place to live?
Florence stood, smoothing her jacket. “This is your first time living on your own. I need to know you’re somewhere safe and comfortable before I can sleep at night.” She smiled, soft and warm. “You keep working. I’ll handle everything. Once it’s ready, I’ll call you, and you can come see it.”
Naomi’s throat tightened. “Mom, I‘
Florence reached out and brushed a strand of hair from her face. “You’re a Hamilton. That never changes.”
Naomi’s eyes stung. She nodded, not trusting her voice.
Florence patted her shoulder. “Alright. Back to work. I’ll talk to you soon.” She left quietly, closing the door behind her.

Her sudden move must have been triggered by what happened the previous day. Once she calmed down, time would surely smooth things over.
Naomi sat there for a long moment, staring at nothing.
She had written that letter to make a statement. To draw a line. She had expected anger. Distance. Maybe even rejection.
Instead, they gave her an apartment.
She didn’t know what to do with that.

I started the novel with great interest. In the beginning the storyline was captivating. Then I feel that the more the story advances, the twists were no longer great. Moreover I don't like Arabella s personality, cold, distant......
