“Fine,” the woman muttered.
Arabella nodded. “Okay. Then we wait. I need to call the police and my insurance company first.”

“By the time they get here, I could be dead. What kind of attitude is that?” The woman’s voice shot up, indignant. “Don’t worry. I’ll have a friend handle it.” Arabella already had her phone out, dialing three numbers in quick succession.
She explained the situation briefly, then hung up and turned to the small crowd that had gathered. “Everyone, please step back. Leave the scene alone. My friend will be here shortly to deal with it.” She looked at the woman. “Let’s find your son first. Then the hospital.”
The woman seemed satisfied. “Fine. Let’s go.”
Arabella slid an arm around her to support her, but as she did, she subtly pressed two fingers to the woman’s wrist. Her eyes narrowed almost imperceptibly.
The woman was fine. Completely fine.
And now that Arabella thought back on it–the woman had darted out intentionally. She’d aimed for the car.
Was this a scam? A payout play? But if that were the case, why hadn’t she demanded cash yet? Why the insistence on finding her son first?
A prickle of unease crawled up Arabella’s spine. She slowed her steps without meaning to.
“So,” Arabella said casually, “if your son lives around here, why weren’t you in his car? Why were you walking?”
The woman shot her a look. “Can’t a person go shopping and take a wrong turn?”
“Sure.” Arabella paused. “Then let’s call him. Have him come pick us up. With your injuries, walking far isn’t–a good idea. Might make things worse.”
“He can’t.” The woman waved ahead. “It’s fine. It’s right up there. Not far.”
Arabella followed her gesture. An alley. Narrow. Dark.
Her expression cooled.
Now she was sure. This woman was trouble.
“Let’s just call an ambulance,” Arabella said, stopping.
The woman’s grip on her wrist tightened–fast, strong. “You don’t have a choice.”
Arabella tried to pull back, surprised by the woman’s strength. “Let go. The police will be here any minute.”
The woman snorted. “Police show up, you’re still the one who hit me.”
“I’ll take responsibility.” Arabella’s voice stayed steady. “But we wait for them to sort it out.”

She knew, absolutely, that walking into that alley meant walking into a trap. She shouldn’t have tested the waters. She should have just waited.
The woman, seeing Arabella wouldn’t budge, raised her voice. “Johnny! Johnny, get over here! This girl hit me and now she’s trying to back out of it!”
Heads turned. Passersby slowed, eyes landing on Arabella. A few men shifted, blocking the sidewalk
“Hey–you can’t just do that,” someone called out.
“Yeah, you hit her, you deal with it.”
“Don’t even think about running. We’re all watching.”
Arabella’s jaw tightened. “I’m not running. The police are coming, Just give it a few minutes.”
“But she’s hurt,” a woman protested. “Every minute counts. What if something happens to her?”
The old woman seized the moment. Her body swayed dramatically “Oh my head so dizzy”
She listed to the side, barely upright.
“See? You want to wait until she drops dead?” someone shouted.
Arabella’s pulse quickened. She’d walked right into this. Cornered by a crowd, no easy way out.
She was calculating how to stall–just a few more minutes until the police arrived–when a figure stepped in front of her. Tall Broad–shouldered. Familiar.
“Who’s that?”
“Looks like someone important.”
Arabella stared at the back she knew too well. “What are you doing here?”
Matthew glanced back at her, then swept his gaze across the crowd. His presence alone seemed to suck the air out of the street. “I already called an ambulance. If she’s injured, she’ll get proper medical attention.”
The woman eyed him warily. “Who are you?”
“Doesn’t matter.” He turned back to Arabella. “You okay?”
“For now.” She exhaled.
He frowned. “For now?”
“Your timing’s perfect.” She meant it. Without him, this would have gotten ugly.
Something in his expression softened. He reached for her hand. “Come on. Andy will handle the rest.”
Her hand was cold, Ice cold. His brow furrowed again.
Was she scared?

Something dark flickered in his chest.
“Andy–stay on her.” He didn’t wait for a response, just led Arabella away.

It took her a second to catch up to what was happening. Then she registered his hand wrapped around hers, warm and solid, and her brain short–circuited.
Was he seriously just… holding her hand? Like it was normal?
She tugged. His grip tightened.
“Two options.” His voice dropped, low enough that only she could hear. “You walk with me holding your hand, or I carry you. Your choice.”
Arabella’s head snapped up. “You-” She stared at him, utterly incredulous. What was that supposed t

I started the novel with great interest. In the beginning the storyline was captivating. Then I feel that the more the story advances, the twists were no longer great. Moreover I don't like Arabella s personality, cold, distant......
