“He was the one who struck her. Why isn’t he being taken in?” Harper jabbed a finger toward Ethan.
“Would
you please keep quiet?” the event coordinator sighed in frustration. “The more you talk, the worse this will get for you.”
Even now, she couldn’t read the situation. Was she really that clueless?
“Goodness, what’s going on here?” Zack and Sarah hurried over.
All they’d heard was commotion, and now Dylan was being handcuffed?
“Sweetie, what happened?” Sarah’s face went pale.
“Mom, you have to help me. They’re pulling rank to screw us over,” Dylan blurted out, as if he’d just spotted a lifeline.
“There must be some mistake here.” Zack tried to reason with the officers.
“We’ll sort out whether it’s a mistake down at the station,” one cop replied flatly.
Zack backed off, then turned to Calvin. “I asked you to bring them to the event. How did things go this wrong?”
“You’ve got some nerve. If you hadn’t pushed for them to come, none of this would’ve happened,” Calvin shot back, furious. He’d ended up stuck with two fools, and now he was going down with them.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Zack frowned.
“They pissed off Mr. Ethan and Mr. Stewart!” Calvin snapped. “Do you even realize how much trouble that is?”
Zack staggered back. “You can’t be serious.”
“You think I’m joking right now?” Calvin retorted. Was cluelessness genetic in that family?
For a second, everything went dark, and Zack nearly lost his balance.
“Are you okay?” Sarah caught his arm. “Don’t panic. Let’s just focus on getting our son out of this.”

“How are we supposed to do that?” Zack said, completely defeated. “We’re talking about Mr. Stewart and Mr. Ethan!”
“We couldn’t afford to cross Mr. Stewart alone, and now Mr. Ethan’s involved too. Do any
idea who Mr. Ethan is in the finance world? If he blacklists us, who’s going to invest?” It was have over. Completely over.

Sarah went just as pale. “How did this happen? What do we do now?”
“Start preparing for bankruptcy.” He didn’t see any way out.
Hearing his father say that, Dylan finally understood how serious things were.
“Mom, that’s Arabella’s brother. Go talk to Arabella. Ask her to cut me some slack,” Dylan whispered urgently.
“What did you just say?” Sarah was stunned.
Dylan explained, “He’s Arabella’s brother. That’s why we messed up and offended him.”
Who would’ve thought Arabella’s brother was such a big deal?
“Where is Arabella?” Sarah’s eyes darted around the room.
It wasn’t hard to spot her. She was over by the buffet with Brielle, both enjoying their food as if the drama across the room had nothing to do with them.
In fact, with everything going on, that oddly calm corner stood out even more.
Sarah quickly fixed a smile on her face and walked over. “Arabella, honey, remember me?”
Startled, Brielle frowned. “Who are you? It’s rude to interrupt people while they’re eating.”
Sarah’s smile faltered for a second. She clenched her teeth and kept her tone gentle as she spoke to Arabella. “Arabella, I just found out my foolish son Dylan offended you. I’ll make sure he gets a real talking–to when we get home. For old times‘ sake, could you let this one go?”
Arabella replied coolly, “You’ve got the wrong idea. There are no ‘old times‘ between him and me.”
“Hear that? Stop acting like you’re close. You’re not,” Brielle said, waving her off. Nothing ruined a good meal like unwanted drama.
Shot down twice, Sarah’s expression soured. “Arabella, you and Dylan were engaged once. Are you really going to be this cold?”

“The girl he was engaged to was the Macdonalds‘ daughter, not me,” Arabella corrected her.
All those years, what kept her going was Edward’s health and finding a way out of that engagement. Marrying Dylan had never been part of her plans.
Even if the baby switch had never happened, even if she really had been the Macdonalds‘ daughter, she would never have given Dylan a second look.
“Lady, did you hear that? The one engaged to that guy was that clueless girl. Honestly, they’re perfect for each other,” Brielle remarked with a shrug, as though she were just stating the obvious.
“Arabella, do our past ties really mean nothing to you?” Sarah was on the verge of losing her
composure.
Being publicly dismissed like this was about to make her snap.
Arabella gave her a cold look. “What past ties? The ones where you set me up? Or the ones where you tried to ruin me?”
Sarah drew a sharp breath. So she knew.
“Arabella, you’ve got it all wrong. Why would we ever do something like that?” Zack stepped in, trying to smooth things over.
Even if it were true, he’d never admit it.
“I may not have proof, but that doesn’t mean I don’t know what went down,” Arabella said, raising an eyebrow. “You should be glad I’m being generous by not making things worse for you now. Or would you rather we go over everything that happened back then? I’ve got people who can back me up, you know.”
As she spoke, her eyes shifted toward Matthew.

I started the novel with great interest. In the beginning the storyline was captivating. Then I feel that the more the story advances, the twists were no longer great. Moreover I don't like Arabella s personality, cold, distant......
