Naomi immediately offered an apologetic smile. “Sorry, I was rushing to meet Ruby earlier and didn’t see you.”

Frank didn’t mind. He simply smiled slightly and then asked, “Why do your eyes look a little red?”

“Oh, the car window was open too wide on the way back,” Naomi answered quickly, thinking on her feet.

Ruby glanced at Naomi. Good thing she’s quick. I should have reminded her.

“Frank, will you be staying longer this time?” Naomi asked, her expression hopeful.

“Most likely. I’ve left the gift I brought for you in your room,” Frank said with his usual indulgent tone.

He never returned from a trip without a present for Naomi, and this time was no different.

“Thanks, Frank.” Naomi hugged his arm affectionately, finally feeling a little comforted.

After being hurt by Matthew again and again, and with Arabella taking so much of their parents‘ attention, being near Frank was the only real solace she had left.

Frank seemed to sense her vulnerability. He patted her head gently. “Come now, you’re a grown woman. You should keep a bit of distance from men.”

Hearing that, Naomi reluctantly released his arm.
