Arabella couldn't help but laugh, shaking her head with a mix of amusement and sympathy. "Looks like Mr. Stewart's caught in the crossfire for no real reason."
None of this was Matthew's doing—in fact, he hadn't even agreed to any of it. This was all Caleb's wishful thinking, so why should Matthew take the blame?
"Don't mind Dad too much," Ethan chimed in lightly. "He's just disappointed, that's all. But he respects your choices. If he can't push you, he'll just vent a little at someone else."
Arabella finally understood. She slipped her arm through Jonathan's and said reassuringly, "Don't worry, Dad. Whoever your future son-in-law is, he'll definitely be a good match for me."
She mostly wanted to make her father feel better. Whether that person truly turned out to be "the best" wasn't something she dwelled on too much.
"Good," Jonathan replied, his expression softening into a warm smile. "My girl deserves nothing less."
Amid the lighthearted conversation, the evening had grown late.
"Alright, everyone, time to turn in," Jonathan announced. "Big day tomorrow."
"You get some rest too, Dad," the siblings said almost in unison as they stood with him.
They headed upstairs one by one, each retiring to their own rooms.
After freshening up, Arabella settled on the edge of her bed, reflecting on her father's earlier comments about Matthew. A soft chuckle escaped her.
"Ethan was right," she murmured to herself. "Looking back, Dad really did sound a little salty about the whole thing." The thought lifted her spirits.
She couldn't help but wonder—what kind of expression would Matthew wear if he ever found out?
As if on cue, her phone rang. She glanced at the screen and raised her brows in surprise: it was Matthew.
Answering, she adopted a business-like tone. "Mr. Stewart, what can I do for you?"
Calling at this hour—it had to be something important.
"Nothing urgent," came Matthew's calm, measured voice.
"Oh?" Arabella was taken aback. If it wasn't urgent, why call so late?
"Nothing major," he repeated, pausing briefly before continuing. "I was wondering if you're free tomorrow evening."
"I am," Arabella replied promptly. "You need me to visit Robert with you, right? That should be fine."
Matthew's tone cooled slightly, a hint of irritation beneath the surface. "I'm inviting you to accompany me to a formal dinner."
Was she so determined to keep everything strictly professional between them?
"Ah, a dinner," Arabella said, feeling unexpectedly flustered.
Right—this was about work. What had she been thinking?
"Since you're available, I'll pick you up after work," Matthew stated, leaving little room for refusal.
"Wait—oh, um, sure," Arabella heard herself agree, still slightly dazed.
"Good," Matthew said simply, ending the call.
Listening to the dial tone, Arabella slowly regained her focus, a puzzled look on her face.
What had just happened?
