“Grandpa, where are you headed? Let me give you a ride.”

Henry quickly averted his eyes. “No, that’s not necessary. You’re not my driver.

“We’ve got plenty of drivers at home anyway. You rarely get a day off. Just treat today as a break and relax a bit. Stop worrying about me.”

Austin immediately picked up on the avoidance and felt something was off.

He watched as Henry’s car drove away, then motioned for the butler to come closer. “Has Grandpa been going out frequently these days?”

“Yeah, Old Mr. Campbell has developed a strong interest in chess.”

Chess?

“So he’s been going out just to play?”

“That’s right.”

Austin knew his grandfather still had a few acquaintances from the same background, but none of them were known for playing chess.

Given how often he’d been leaving the house, this had to involve someone new.

A faint unease settled in Austin’s chest. He decided to follow quietly, driving on his own while keeping a safe distance.

From across the road, he observed Henry enter a small, old–fashioned cafe.

His expression darkened as he tried to make sense of it.

“Elijah, you’re back.”

Right now, the person Elijah respected the most was his future wife’s grandfather.

Without Henry’s help, he and Winona wouldn’t have reached such a turning point.

“Henry, are we going to play today?”

Elijah didn’t respond to the scolding. Instead, he guided him up to the second floor.

The chessboard still displayed the unfinished game from before.

Henry glanced at it and asked, “So where were we?”

Elijah gave a light chuckle. “Henry, it’s your turn.”

Even after being corrected, he kept using that name without hesitation.

Once he had decided on it, he didn’t plan to change.

Henry had been waiting for him to bring up Winona, but Elijah remained silent about her.

“So, Elijah, have you and my granddaughter patched things up yet?”

Elijah shook his head. “Not yet, but she’s started responding to my messages.”

Henry stared at him. That’s it? That’s your big breakthrough?

He had expected something much bigger.

“Are you serious? After all this time, that’s all you’ve managed?”

“Henry, relationships take time. I want Winona to come to me sincerely, from the heart.”

Henry scoffed, though there was a hint of approval beneath it.

Austin had always known Elijah was clever, but he hadn’t anticipated this kind of double

strategy.

The man was working on both fronts–courting his sister while gaining favor with his grandfather–clearly trying to work his way into the family from every angle.

He waited until Henry left the cafe before stepping inside himself.
