Chapter 494: I Get It

He let her guide him back, though every step felt like surrender. He didn’t like being in one place. If Luca had made plans, he couldn’t sit there and be useless. There was still someone out there who wanted to hurt them. Someone who had worked with Bianca. Would it end now that Bianca was dead?

No.

Marco knew better. If he could somehow get his hands on her financials, maybe he could follow the money. Find out who she was paying. Just anything he could do. Something he could do.

The moment Luca stepped out of the car the next morning, Vee was there. He barely had time to turn before she threw herself at him, arms wrapping around his neck with enough force to knock the breath from his lungs. If the car hadn’t been behind him, Luca was certain they would have gone straight to the ground.

Vee practically jumped into his arms, and he caught her on instinct, hands sliding beneath her thighs to hold her steady as her legs locked around his waist. Her hair brushed his jaw. Her scent hit him next, and every storm inside him quieted. "You’re home," she breathed. She kissed his cheek.

Luca chuckled.

"My God, you’re home." Another kiss. "You’re home." Another one. "Thank you." Another one.

"Okay," Luca laughed, tightening his hold on her. "I get it."

She pulled back and looked at his face, her hands framing his jaw. There were faint shadows beneath her eyes. She had not slept much.

He lowered her gently until her feet touched the ground. She still clung to him. He kept one arm around her waist, the other lifting to the back of her head, fingers sliding into her hair. "How have you been?" he asked.

"Worried out of my mind is what I have been." She pressed her forehead to his chest, holding him tighter. "Tell me you don’t have to leave again."

Luca closed his eyes for a second. "No," he said, kissing the top of her head. "I’m all yours for the rest of the day."

"How are you?" Vee asked immediately. "Are you good? Any injuries?" Her hands were already moving over him before he could answer.

Luca stood there and allowed the inspection like a man being searched by airport security. "I’m fine, love."

Her fussing.

Her eyes scanning him.

He had missed it.

Vee worried about him, he knew that. He appreciated it. She looked like his life was necessary to her breathing.

He held her face gently between his hands and placed a brief kiss on her lips. It was meant to calm her. It calmed him instead.

When he pulled back, her gaze dropped. She stared at his hand. Luca followed her eyes and understood immediately.

Before she could hide the little flash of hurt, he reached into his shirt and pulled out the thin chain resting against his chest. The wedding ring hung from it.

Vee’s face softened then she smiled. "Efficient."

"I’d rather keep it close to my heart," Luca said, his voice lowering, "where there is little chance of blood tainting it."

Always making romance out of violence and somehow managing to make it beautiful.

"Good thinking," she said softly.

He tucked the chain back beneath his shirt. The world could take his hands, stain his sleeves, demand blood from every inch of him but their promise stayed protected. "I see you haven’t been to Commissioned."

Vee exhaled. "Yeah," she admitted. "I don’t think I can bring myself to concentrate on work at the moment. But the club is still running," she added. "Only the office area is shut down."

"It’s open now," Luca said.

I wanted to, he thought.

Every night away from you felt like punishment.

I nearly drove back here twenty times.
