Val swallowed hard.
"You came with a driver?" Luca asked.
"Yes..." Val nodded frantically.
"You go home, get ready and leave for Italy as planned. Alright?"
"I cannot..." Valentina argued, her voice shaking. She saw beneath the stillness, Luca was afraid.
"I assure you," he said, each word steady, "I will have your sister back to you. I need you to trust me on this. Go home."
Val’s lips trembled. She should have argued but she knew she was only going to get in the way. Vee was her sister, she could not just walk away and leave. But she had to. They both knew that. She nodded, tears sliding down her cheeks.
Luca turned and walked into the mall with his phone in hand, the tracker app still open on the screen.
The dot had not moved. That was what troubled him most. If Veronica still had the necklace on her, the signal should have been moving with her. But the dot remained fixed.
Luca’s jaw tightened as he followed it deeper into the mall. Around him, the world continued in obscene normality. People browsed. Music played softly from hidden speakers. Cash registers chimed. His men followed closely behind him, but he barely registered them.
Every step drove the fear deeper into his ribs. Where are you, Bambola? The tracker led him into the clothing section. Dresses hung in careful rows. Mannequins stood posed in elegant silence, draped in fabrics meant to catch the eye. Racks of clothing surrounded him in neat, colourful lines.
A perfect place for a trap.
Luca stopped when the blinking dot on his screen told him he had reached the exact location. He lifted his gaze slowly.
Nothing.
No Veronica. No struggle. No phone. No blood. Just mannequins and clothes and empty space where his wife should have been.
He turned to Vee’s guards behind him. "Look around!"
They scattered immediately, searching beneath racks, behind fitting-room curtains, around display tables. Luca remained where he was, eyes sweeping the room, his heart thudding harder with each pass.
"Where are you, Bambola?" he muttered.
Then his gaze caught on something familiar. A leather bag hanging from the arm of a mannequin.
"No..."
It was hers. Veronica loved that particular bag, even though she owned hundreds. Practical, she called it.
He moved closer to the mannequin when his eyes caught the diamond necklace hanging low on it.
A broken sound caught in Luca’s throat. It was close enough to pain to tear through him. His hand trembled once, before he forced it steady and reached for the mannequin.
One by one, he untangled everything that belonged to his wife. The bag first then the bracelet. Then the diamond necklace he had placed on her himself, the one meant to keep her safe, the one that now hung uselessly around a faceless mannequin like a fucking joke.
His eyes dropped lower. Her wedding rings. Veronica’s rings had no business being here. They belonged on her finger, against her skin, where he had put them, where they told the world she was his wife.

Blood for your blood...
