His shoulders were already defensive, his face cold. He looked like a man prepared to reject a plea before it was made.
In Luca’s mind, the matter was simple. If Enzo had come to beg mercy for David, he had wasted a journey.
"Luca..." Enzo said quietly. "How is your wife?"
Luca’s jaw tightened. Even the question touched a bruise. "She is doing well, thank you."
"I am glad." Enzo looked down at the glass in his hand, then back up at him. "I truly do want to apologise for everything. I had a part to play in what happened, even if I did not know the full extent of it. My ignorance cost people pain. Your wife. Your family. Mine too."
Forgiveness was not Luca’s strongest talent. He did not forgive easily, and he certainly did not forgive when Veronica’s blood was involved.
Enzo continued, "I hope, one day, you forgive my ignorance."
Luca held his gaze. "I am not giving you your son...I will kill him."
Enzo merely shrugged. He had expected it. Some part of him had come hoping to hear it. A father should have fought for his son, perhaps, but David had crossed beyond the reach of blood. "It is probably for the best...David has been dead to me for years already."
Luca gave a small nod. Enzo stayed a while longer, discussing Graziella’s funeral plans with Massimo. The conversation was stiff and formal.
As soon as he left, Luca headed down to the underground holding where David was chained. David hung exactly the way he had chained Luca in the warehouse.
The symmetry was poetic. His wrists were fixed above his head to a metal bar suspended from the ceiling, his body left bare from the waist up. Marco had prepared him properly.
David had not been allowed rest. That had been Luca’s instruction. No sleep. No peace. Men had taken turns with him through the night, passing brutality from hand to hand. By the time Luca entered the underground holding room, David already looked as though hell had dragged him behind a truck.
The room itself was built for ugly truths. Stone walls. Iron drains. A low ceiling. One bright light hanging above the centre. There were hooks on the walls, tools on a steel table, a chair bolted to the floor, and a drain beneath David’s feet.
Luca paused just inside the door. He looked David over, slowly. He had promised him every inch of skin would be stripped from his body. He intended to keep his promise.
David lifted his head. One eye was swollen. Blood stained his teeth when he smiled. "I was beginning to think you were going to miss out on the fun," David drawled. His voice was rough, scraped raw from what had already been done to him, but the arrogance remained.
Luca stepped farther into the room, unhurried. "Excuse my tardiness...I was busy caring for my wife."
"Ah..." David’s grin widened despite the blood. "I should have killed her when I could have."
"I tell people who take me on," Luca said quietly, "that better men have tried and failed." He circled David once, studying the injuries. "But I must give credit where credit is due."
David watched him through the hair falling into his face. Luca walked back to the door and tapped it once.
