It was her daughter's birthday, and her husband was MIA. A wife showing concern for her husband's whereabouts was perfectly natural. How could Meredith possibly fault her for that?

At the end of the day, it was Sebastian's big mouth that had handed Elara the perfect excuse.

This spoiled young master really thought he could do whatever he wanted just because the elders of the Vance and Beckett families constantly enabled his behavior. He was getting completely out of hand!

Meredith cursed Sebastian up and down in her head, shot Elara a venomous glare, and plastered a stiff, awkward smile on her face.

"A very important employee at the company got injured. Julian took her to the ER and has been dealing with that the whole time. When I called him earlier, he didn't answer either. He probably just didn't have his phone on him."

She knew Sebastian was fully aware of Julian rushing Vivian to the hospital. If she tried to lie, Sebastian would undoubtedly blow her cover. It was better to strike first and confess the partial truth.

"Why would Julian need to personally escort an injured employee to the hospital?" Maddox asked, utterly baffled.

As if struck by a painful realization, Elara looked devastated, her voice trembling slightly. "Is... is this employee Ms. Winthrop?"

"..."

Meredith lifted her eyelids, leveling an icy glare at her daughter-in-law.

Elara used to be a brilliant lawyer. Had playing housewife for a few years completely rotted her brain?

Could she not see how livid Maddox was getting?

Bringing up Vivian right now—was she intentionally trying to throw Julian under the bus?!

She refused to answer, but her silence was an answer in itself.

"A rookie who's been at the company for a few months somehow managed to become an 'important' employee worthy of the CEO's personal care. It seems this Ms. Winthrop is quite extraordinary."

He enunciated the last sentence slowly, pausing between each word like a highlighter dragging across the crucial facts to maximize the damage.

"That's..."

Meredith was rendered speechless. She didn't know how much dirt Sebastian actually had, so she didn't dare spin a total lie. She settled for a weak, defensive excuse. "She is the heiress of Winthrop Global, after all. Ark Solutions is about to close a deal with them, so it's only right that Julian takes extra care of her."

Sebastian nodded in deep, exaggerated agreement. Before Meredith could even let out a breath of relief, he drove the knife in deeper. "So, in order to personally care for a strange woman, he skipped his own daughter's birthday party, ignored his phone for hours, and ghosted every single call and text?"

Meredith: "..."

The living room fell dead silent, suffocated by an oppressive, explosive tension.
