He could tell she was angry, but there was no trace of outrage or devastation.

Especially the devastation.

When a woman found out her beloved husband was cheating on her, wasn't she supposed to be heartbroken and furious?

Even if she had no proof and was only guessing, shouldn't she at least be in agonizing pain?

Why wasn't she?

Unaware of the gears turning in Julian's head, Elara saw him standing there in silence and assumed he was just fishing for an excuse. She pressed on, "Tell me, which part did I get wrong?"

"You..."

Julian looked away, his eyes briefly landing on the heated milk in the microwave before returning to her, slipping right back into his usual aloof demeanor.

"You're overthinking it."

When he finally spoke, he used his classic deflection tactic. "I have you and Melody. Why would I want anyone else?" he said robotically.

Elara sneered. "Then explain to me why you haven't been coming home. Why you would ignore your sick daughter and miss her birthday party without a word, all for someone else?"

"Why are you bringing that up again?"

Julian lost his patience. "Didn't I already explain what happened when Melody was sick? What's the point of obsessing over the past?"

"Because there's a massive parallel between the time she was sick and today, when you blew off her birthday party to play nurse for Vivian."

Elara pushed off the counter and stood tall, lifting her chin slightly as she took a slow, deliberate step toward him.

"In the four years since Melody was born, unless you were on a business trip and physically couldn't make it, you always rushed home the second she needed you."

"In four years, there were exactly two times you failed to show up for her. Once when she was sick, and again today."

Elara stared him down, waiting for an answer. Julian finally explained, "First of all, Ark Solutions is going to be collaborating with the Winthrop family soon. Vivian is working as my assistant, and it only makes sense for me to take extra care of our business partner's daughter."

"Secondly, I need her father's backing."

"Aren't you already planning to collaborate? Why would you need his backing?"

Julian paused, looking conflicted. After a moment of hesitation, he sighed deeply, as if making a monumental decision. "I need his shares to secure control of Beckett Corp."

"Are you trying to fight Sebastian for control of the company?" Elara stared at him in feigned shock.

Julian didn't deny it. "You work so hard taking care of Melody. I was going to wait until everything was settled before telling you, but I can't keep you in the dark while you're so anxious."

It was the absolute truth.

If he hadn't been forced into a corner and in desperate need of more time to execute his plans, Julian never would have traded such critical information just to keep Elara quiet.
