Even though she was clearly siding with Melody, Elara wasn't ignoring him. She showed no signs of resentment or hostility.

It was as if yesterday's disaster had never happened. As if he hadn't skipped the birthday party, as if Melody wasn't furious, and as if they hadn't engaged in a vicious screaming match. It was business as usual, and he was still Jocelyn's ideal son-in-law.

Julian walked into the kitchen and purposely picked up Melody's little bowl first.

Melody was already seated at the dining table, sipping the milk Elara had given her.

When the steaming bowl of seafood linguine was set down, she swallowed her milk and opened her mouth to say thank you. Then she realized whose hands had placed it there. The words died on her tongue, swallowed right back down.

Puffing her cheeks out in anger, Melody glared up at Julian.

Julian offered a warm smile. "Here's your breakfast."

Melody pressed her lips into a tight, trembling line. Trying her hardest to hold back her temper, she shot a desperate, pleading look at Elara.

Elara gently stroked her hair, offering no reprimand. She simply said, "Wait for it to cool down before you eat."

Melody stared at her mother for a second, then gave a tiny nod. "Okay."

Mommy wasn't stopping her from being mad at Daddy.

Melody was thoroughly satisfied with that.

After breakfast, as they pushed their chairs back, Julian noticed Elara unlocking her phone to open a ride-hailing app. "I'll drive you guys to school," he offered quickly.

Elara paused, then slipped her phone back into her pocket. "Sure."

Melody pursed her lips in blatant displeasure. She stewed in her anger for a few moments but didn't throw a fit, dutifully following her mother into Julian's car.

Julian's eyes landed on the massive tote bag Elara had brought along—one she used to carry when she was a practicing attorney. "Do you have plans today?"

Elara set the bag down next to Melody's backpack, her tone casual. "Yeah, I'm grabbing lunch with Sarah."

Julian was surprised. "You're heading out this early?"

"Why are you giving her shares of the company?!"

Meredith shrieked so loudly it practically blew out his eardrum, forcing Julian to pull the phone away.

He waited for her tirade to end before bringing it back to his ear.

"I'm not crazy."

Julian gave her a sanitized version of his argument with Elara. "She's already suspicious. She's even threatening divorce."

"So what if she's suspicious?"

Meredith scoffed maliciously. "She doesn't have a shred of proof. If you don't admit to it, what exactly can she do?"

"Besides, if it really comes down to a divorce, she'll never give up custody of Melody. She's a former lawyer; you think she doesn't know the odds are completely stacked against her right now?"

"She has no income and hasn't worked in years. Where would she get the nerve to actually file for divorce and risk losing her child? You're a fool if you actually believe her."
