Elara drove straight to Ark Solutions and pulled into the underground parking garage. Before getting out, she texted Julian to let him know the car was returned.
It was almost time to clock out, and Julian was likely swamped. He didn't text back.
Elara led Jocelyn up from the garage, planning to grab lunch at a nearby restaurant before heading home.
The elevator dinged at the first floor. As the doors slid open, they were met with a chaotic swarm of employees.
Everyone was clutching documents, rushing around frantically as if the building were on fire.
Elara pulled Jocelyn out of the way, dodging the frantic crowd while her mind raced to the corporate whistleblower report.
She had provided the death certificate of the legal representative for Vanguard Strategic. But knowing how the regulatory agencies operated, it was practically impossible for them to investigate and issue a penalty in less than twenty-four hours unless it was an absolute emergency.
Maybe something else had happened?
She had never actually worked for the company. Even as the CEO's wife in name, none of these employees were going to spill corporate secrets to her.
"Let's go."
Abandoning the idea of pulling someone aside to interrogate them, Elara guided Jocelyn toward the exit.
Jocelyn kept glancing back at the panicked staff, her brow furrowed in worry. "Did something happen at the company?"
"I don't know."
"Aren't you going to ask Julian?"
"He wouldn't tell me even if I did."
Elara didn't even look back. "He shut me out of the company's affairs a long time ago. If I go out of my way to ask, he'll just think I'm being annoying."
Stepping out of the lobby, Elara flashed her mother a tight smile. "Since someone else is already making his life miserable, I don't need to join the party."
"I'm starving. Let's go eat, Mom."
