Julian was chatting with Vivian in the study.
Elara wasn't asleep either.
Melody seemed to be having a nightmare. On the baby monitor, she was tossing and turning restlessly.
Worried, Elara got up, threw on a cardigan, and headed to the next room to check on her.
Just as she pulled her bedroom door open, the sound of another door opening echoed down the hallway.
Julian was stepping out of the study.
The main lights were off, leaving only the faint glow of the motion-sensor nightlights, making it hard for either of them to see the other's expression clearly.
But Elara instantly noticed something different about Julian. His face looked flushed.
The heating was on in the house, but nowhere near high enough to make someone flush and sweat.
Coupled with the lingering, unmistakable lust in his eyes the moment their gazes met...
Elara was a married woman and a mother; she knew exactly what had just happened.
She froze. Beneath her cardigan, her hands instinctively curled into fists. She had thought her heart was completely numb, yet it still gave a sharp, unavoidable twinge of pain.
It had only been one night, and he really couldn't hold back?
"Elara?"
Julian snapped out of it first. After a brief flash of guilt, he closed the study door and walked over. "Why are you up?"
Elara stared at him quietly for a moment. It wasn't until he was close that she spoke, her voice flat. "Melody seems to be having a nightmare. I'm going to check on her."
"A nightmare?"
Julian instantly panicked, completely forgetting his plan to rush over to Vivian's apartment. His entire mind snapped back to his daughter.
"Is it bad?"
"Come on, I'll go check on her with you."
Without waiting for Elara to reply, Julian strode straight toward Melody's room.
Elara watched his frantic, hurried back thoughtfully as he urgently yet carefully pushed the bedroom door open.
