It had been a long time since he spent a full day with Elara and their child.
By the time Saturday drew to a close, Julian suddenly realized that Elara had truly, completely changed.
She was paranoid, prone to playing the victim, and cried at the drop of a hat—just like the insufferable, bitter wives he often heard his colleagues complain about over dinner.
Whenever he showed the slightest intention of leaving, Elara would gaze at him with tear-filled eyes, asking if he was leaving again and couldn't stay with Melody.
From start to finish, Elara was fighting for Melody's rights. Even if she harbored the same desires, she never once mentioned her own needs. Every word out of her mouth was about Melody.
And to make matters worse, Melody looked at him with those same pitiful, anxious, and hopeful eyes.
Hopeful that he would stay, and anxious that he would give them an answer they dreaded.
Perhaps because he had gone too far recently, Melody had stopped expecting anything. She didn't even dare to ask him directly, terrified of hearing a rejection, terrified he would leave again.
Meeting his child's gaze, Julian felt a sharp pang of heartache, guilt, and shame.
When Elara tearfully pleaded with him to stay, and Melody stared at him so longingly time and time again, Julian found it physically impossible to say no.
Though Melody never explicitly said she forgave him, he stayed by her side all day Saturday, and she didn't push him away.
On Sunday morning, when he went into Melody's room and said good morning, the little girl hesitated before softly murmuring it back.
It was a long-lost morning greeting from his daughter. Julian thought he had misheard. He stood frozen, staring blankly at her.
Elara found it amusing and teased from the sidelines, "What, are you stunned? Melody just said good morning to you. Are you really that happy?"
Julian gave her a look, neither confirming nor denying it, and quietly pulled up his designated small stool to sit beside Melody.
