Elara met his gaze, slightly confused. Unable to ask out loud, she tilted her head in a silent inquiry.
Sebastian stared at her deeply for another moment. Hearing Julian's urging through the phone, he finally looked away, turned, and walked out of the private room.
With a soft click, the door closed behind him.
Elara remained puzzled but didn't dwell on it. The perfectly crafted sweet expression on her face vanished without a trace.
With no one else around, there was no need to pretend to be happy.
When she didn't speak for a while, Julian grew impatient on the other end. "What's wrong? Why aren't you saying anything?"
Elara glanced at her phone screen and placed the device on the table. Her sweet voice remained unchanged, but her face was entirely void of emotion.
"Nothing. Sebastian just stepped out."
"He left?"
Elara wasn't entirely sure, so she said, "He probably went to the restroom."
Julian paused, then probed, "Do you guys eat together often?"
"What's that supposed to mean?" Julian never asked her things like this. Elara's guard instantly went up. "Are you suspecting us?"
"Sebastian is family! How can you even think that?"
"After all these years, don't you know how we interact?"
Julian had only asked one question, and Elara fired back with three, leaving him completely speechless.
"...I was just curious."
His train of thought thoroughly derailed by her intense reaction, Julian lost all desire to test her. The conversation naturally shifted back to Sebastian.
"Besides, from what I know, Sebastian has been really busy with work lately. I'm just surprised he could find the time to have lunch with you."
"He was already out for lunch. We ran into each other. What's the difference between eating with me or eating alone?" Elara sounded utterly baffled. Then, as if realizing something, she paused briefly and teased, "Julian, are you jealous?"
