Elara had just walked in. Upon hearing that all-too-familiar voice over the phone, she lowered her eyes without a trace of surprise. Pretending she had just stepped through the door and heard nothing, she asked softly, "Is Melody still asleep?"

The moment Julian heard Vivian's voice, it was as if a surge of energy had been pumped into his exhausted body. His lips instinctively curled upward, but just as the name "Viv" reached his lips, Elara's voice cut him off.

Julian's smile froze instantly. The corners of his mouth hovered awkwardly, twisting his features into a bizarre, strained expression.

Elara had appeared so suddenly that Julian had no time to warn the person on the other end, nor could he hang up. Hearing her voice, he instinctively spun around. "Yeah, she's still asleep."

His phone screen was still glaringly bright, clearly displaying an active call.

Elara continued to feign ignorance as she strolled closer. She deliberately kept her voice low, but at a volume perfectly calibrated to carry through the microphone to the listener on the other side.

"Maddox and Meredith's food must have been incredible. She's sleeping so soundly tonight. You carried her all the way up here, and she didn't even twitch."

As she drew nearer, Julian instinctively hid his phone behind his back. In his panicked state, he didn't even realize that trying to hide it made him look infinitely more suspicious.

He also failed to notice that Elara seemed completely blind to his painfully obvious reaction.

"Yeah."

Julian gave a stiff reply. "She's knocked out. Let's skip her bath tonight. I'll get some warm water and a towel to wipe her face and hands, and we'll deal with the rest tomorrow."

"That sounds perfect."

Elara stopped right in front of him, looking thoroughly pleased with his plan, thrilled that after so long, he was finally taking care of his daughter again.

"If Melody knew her dad was washing her hands and face, she'd be absolutely thrilled."

Elara turned slightly to gaze lovingly at the sleeping girl on the bed, her voice dripping with warmth. "If you had done this sooner, she probably would have forgiven you by now."
