Julian opened his mouth, desperate to defend himself, but the words withered in his throat.
What could he possibly say?
This was the bitter consequence of neglecting his child and abandoning his home for so long.
He had single-handedly carved this deeply ingrained impression into her mind. A few hollow excuses weren't going to rewrite a child's reality.
"Melody."
Julian gripped the towel tightly, his voice laced with bitter awkwardness as he swore, "Daddy isn't working overtime anymore. I'm going to make sure I stay home with you every single day."
Melody stared blankly at Elara. Having just woken up, her tiny brain was still buffering, and she couldn't quite process the sudden shift in reality.
Julian watched her with intense anxiety.
Elara shot him a cool sideways glance. Surprisingly, she didn't use the opportunity to rub his recent absences in his face, graciously offering an explanation instead. "That's right. Daddy promised me he'll be a good boy and stay home with us tonight."
Melody's eyes visibly widened in sheer disbelief.
She looked at Elara, then slowly turned her gaze back to Julian.
Julian nodded emphatically. He raised three fingers in the air, swearing solemnly, "I promise! Daddy isn't going anywhere tonight. I'm going to stay right here and focus on you!"
Melody didn't completely trust Julian's words, but she did trust a solemn oath.
The cartoons on TV said that swearing an oath meant making a promise to the heavens, and anyone who broke it would be blasted by lightning.
She had literally seen characters on TV get struck down for lying.
Because of that, Melody was willing to trust the heavens.
"Okay, then."
Melody's eyes darted around thoughtfully before she nestled deeper into Elara's embrace, delivering her terms in her sweet toddler voice. "But I can sleep by myself. You don't have to stay with me the whole time."
What else could Julian possibly say?
Right now, whatever Melody decreed was the law. He could only nod along. "Alright. Just call for Daddy if you need anything, and I'll be right there."
