Her voice sounded completely out of control, bordering on frantic. "Why would he go to such lengths for Elara?"

"No, Elara must have begged him, right?"

"What exactly did she say to him in The Manor Library that day?"

"Were her eyes red when she came out? She must have been crying! She definitely bawled and begged the old man!"

"Mom!"

Julian raised his voice, cutting off her unhinged conspiracy theories. "Stop overthinking."

His sudden movement disturbed Vivian. Julian quickly coaxed her back to sleep, threw on a bathrobe, and got out of bed to take the call outside or in the bathroom.

But Meredith was too agitated. In the dead silence of the room, her shrill voice pierced through the receiver, echoing into the space.

Julian's raised voice immediately jolted Vivian awake.

Half-asleep, she couldn't make out Meredith's exact words, but the frantic squawking was enough to ruin her dreams and banish her exhaustion.

"Julian."

Rubbing her eyes, Vivian sat up, clutching the sheets to her chest. "Who are you talking to?"

Her voice was soft and groggy, making it impossible for the person on the other end to decipher her words.

But that didn't matter. Meredith only needed to recognize Vivian's tone.

She immediately sobered up, dropping her voice to a whisper. "Are you with Vivian?"

"Yeah," Julian replied nonchalantly. He walked back from the bathroom door, grabbed a thick robe, and draped it over Vivian's shoulders. "Don't catch a cold."

Vivian tilted her head up, flashed him a sweet smile, and obediently slipped her arms into the sleeves. "All bundled up."

The lovebirds hadn't even gotten out of bed yet?

Meredith quickly backpedaled. "I'll hang up then. It's getting late. Get up and have some breakfast. Call me when you're free."

With that, she abruptly ended the call.
